Then the speaker has a built-in amp/decoder, something that can decode the blinks of an optical cable. The amp might have an optical out allowing you to use what you have, you'll have to check its specs.
Anyway, did you buy just an amp or amp and speakers?

Just buying the amp at the mo.

the speaker I plan on using I'm moving from the kitchen. It has an optical in so was hoping to use that.

It sounds like you need to buy some new speakers mate. It's hard to say without knowing anything specific about your equipment, but that speaker sounds like it's not designed to be used with an amplifier. You probably need one with slots on the back for copper cable to be inserted. As I say very hard to say without knowing specifically what kit you have.

Alternatively don't buy the amp, and just connect your game system directly to the speaker if it has optical in. Depends on what kind of results you are looking for but that will work and save you money.

You plug devices into that speaker - eg phono cables/optical from a console/cd player etc, so the amp is useless

An amp outputs to speakers via cable

                Is it a single speaker?

                  Yep a single speaker.

                  so no amp required?
                  therefore I'm lookin at:

                  ps4 to speaker through optical
wiiu - just use tele sound!
turntable- to speaker through phono cables

Is the Wii U hooked up via HDMI? I'm not sure if it can do what the PS3 does and output sound over phono but video over HDMI. Seems it can't

One option could be to have the TV send sound to the speaker as well, maybe over phono or digital. The TVs I've tried this with only output stereo over optical, not 5.1, but if you only have the one speaker then I guess that's no problem!

The Wii U can do that actually, sound via phono. Think they added it in an update.

Oh great. A quick Google turned up nothing.

I was going to say in that case you could use a phono splitter or switch box and hook both the Wii U and turntable up that way.

Well chaps I've had a muck about!

If i run an optical cable from my TV to the speaker then I have sound from the PS4 and/or the WiiU.

                          Success!!
