DARPA developed ARPANET, the first packet switching network funded by the US military. A packet switching network is not an "internet" as we know it today, its just the basic idea on which it is built.

America can't claim they invented the internet because they invented the packet switching network. Much in the same way that cave men didn't invent the Hum Vee just because they invented the wheel.

"Internet" is a general use word invented by the media to describe a whole range of technologies including TCP/IP, HTML, Ethernet, FTP. No one person or company invented all of it.

I'm not so sure about that. I thought it started out of some U.S. military network called ARPA net or something and then just grew from there. Probably there was a Brit involved, but I think collectively its an American job and not the work of one bloke from the UK

I use NTL Broadband. Its pretty good - service seldom is interrupted. Its a pretty straightforward package (think ?25 per month for 512 k d/l speeds), not sure if its got any perks or extras. However, like most providers, be prepared for long waits in telephone queues if you ever have to call the customer support line.
