Damn, been putting off buying a new pc for over half a year now, mainly due to the fact a certain game wasn't released in september theres always something new on the horizon to put you off buying. Are the next gen cards going to use pci express ? if so then it will probably going to take a few months and motherboard revisions till you can get a really good setup, so it looks like its going to be another few months till I can upgrade, oh well at least I have my voodoo5 to keep me companey

A GFX card alone can't make a game like Far Cry run perfectly.

I have the lesser 9700 Pro, but I can run it without a single drop in frame rate on max everything @ 1280*1024 due to the fact I have a balanced setup of CPU/MB/RAM.

Of course I'm aware that a graphics card alone will not make a game run smoothly, that's why I felt it necessary to make it clear that the rest of his PC was filled with top of the line components.

He's got a really sweet set up, like I said, he's spent some ?800 on the PC, the only two things I could think were 'wrong' with his one PC was: he's got 2x256 DDR ram in Dual DDR, I felt he could use 2x512 but, he chose to buy the best quality 256 instead of high quality 512... Also, his HDD is a little old now, and is getting full... that would have an effect.

My other friend with a very similar set up had fewer problems, but still, if you are spending that money on something, it should run perfectly at max, thiers didn't!

OH, and it took an age to load the levels... That was probably exclusively his HDD being full though!

Far Cry is all about your cpu I reckon.

A gig of ram and a decent gfx card definately help - but without a 3 gig + cpu you're gonna drop frames. (my xp-m at 2.5 gigs is so close to being able to run FC perfectly .... but not quite :/. Bloody pcs)

            Hmm...

Well I am running a shuttle Pc :

            p4 2.8 HT (800fsb)
            1GB OCZ Paired Ram 3200
            Samsung Spinpoint Drive (160GB)
Rad 9600XT 128 MB Fireblade (running it with overdrive)

and I am running Farcry in 1024x768 with all settings on High, Environment on Very High, AA low and AF on 1 I think.
Works like a charm.. very smooth and playable..

            Matt

Nips, I expect your mates have (like my mate) turned on 16x FSAA and 8x AF at 1600x1200 and expected it to give them oral sex whilst playing.

I'm glad I waited. Most I can shuv in my machine (cba with the full upgrade) is a 3000+ amd, and thats around a tonne now. Coupled with the above, should see a doubling in performance for about 230 quid. heh.
