There is no 60Hz setting for standard def signals on a PAL unit, so you will be forcing games to run at 50Hz. Not recommended.

720p, 1080i/p all run at 60Hz regardless of the which console you have, its just standard def that is gimped on PAL units.

I presume that only applies to early models because my 40gb PAL unit will display all my NTSC games in 480i/p at 60hz.

I was referring to PS3 games, not PS1/2 backwards compatible titles.

Applicable PS1/2 titles had the 60Hz option in the games menu, but PS3 games reference the XMB settings..

40gb's can still play PS1 titles

I too am a 40gb PAL owner, so perhaps someone can enlighten me as to where the 480i/p setting is? I just can't seem to see it...

                    I'm reffering to PS3 games.

If I start an NTSC game with the XMB set to 576p, the video will switch to 480p when it starts.

Just re-read. It's because you are playing NTSC games. NTSC doesn't do 576, so it switches to 480. Nothing to be alarmed about.

Its standard pal option, SD pal is 576i, the 480p you refer to is 576p in UK.

This is certainly news to me.

AFAIK, the discs do not contain any flags that instruct the console to output at a certain resolution/refresh rate. The game upon loading references the settings made in the XMB and outputs accordingly. Since 480i/p is not an option, it isn't output.
At least that is what I have been led to believe. Without any NTSC PS3 titles to test, I have to ask for further proof.

If someone with an NTSC PS3 title could post a shot of their TV's info pain showing 480i or p on their PAL unit, then I'd be satisfied.

I will be very happy to be proven wrong as this would make owning a PAL unit with an 60Hz capable SD display a much more tenable option.

Time Crisis 4 Japanese HDMI 480p

                                Tekken DR HDMI 480p

                                Tekken DR component 480i

Tekken was downloaded from the US store btw.

All the NTSC PS3 games I've tried switch to 480i/p. Japanese DVDs too.
