Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu Black Label (JP XB360)

So i've been playing around with this for the last hour and a half and I think i've already gotten to grips with the scoring system.

Actually surprisingly easy to get into, but it's one hell of a departure from the scoring system of 1.5! Completely different and it screwed with my head initially, being so used to it.

Absolutely love it to pieces, but then again it was a given that I would.

The gist of the scoring system here, for people that have played 1.5, is no longer to cancel bullets with your hyper. Instead, you've got to hold in both your normal shot and turbo shot buttons together to fire them both at the same time. This is ridiculously powerful, but it builds up your red gauge.

Once your red gauge passes a certain level, everything all goes balls deep and you essentially go into scoring mode. Bullets get faster, and much more plentiful, but your hyper gauge fills up at the speed of light. Now here's where things get even more different and the thing you'll want to keep in mind.

Cancelling bullets with your hyper shot does NOT increase your chain anymore, however large enemies and yellow bee pickups now clear bullets off the screen, and add to your chain, meaning scoring is now a case of:

    Go into Red mode
Fill the screen with as many enemy bullets as you can handle
Pick up a yellow bee / shoot down a large enemy.

Wham, bam, there goes your hit counter and subsequently your score. From what I can tell, you just need to keep that chain high and shoot stuff. There's none of this score multiplier bollocks that takes effect once you've got a full hyper gauge and don't use it, like in 1.5, so spam those hypers, fill the screen with ridiculous amounts of bullets and cancel them all away with enemy destruction and bee pickups.

One thing to mention is that hypers now stock as items, just like in Dodonpachi Daioujou, however they are directly tied in with your bombs. So you can expend your bombs either as hypers or bombs, if i'm making any sense. Filling up your hyper gauge gives you back a bomb/hyper stock.

Power mode can only stock 2 hypers AFAIK.

I managed to get to Stage 4 but wasn't playing in score attack mode, so i'll keep you guys updated as to how i'm starting to score now.

Nice 1st post. Out of interest what was the reason for packaging Black Label seperate from the previous release?

I love the Cave games, but due to the complexity of owning them, I give them a miss.

It's both packaged seperately and available as DLC. As I only own Ver 1.5 on the iPhone, the seperate disc retail release was a godsend for me as I seriously wanted to get into black label.

I'm sure Cave would say it allows people to play BLACK LABEL without the need to own a copy of Ver1.5 but it just seems like an exercise in fleecing the fanbase. Especially when the "KetsuiPachi" Arrange mode is exclusive to the disc version.

          -

That's quite a carrot to dangle in front of Ver1.5 owners. And since there's no Ver1.5 modes in the Black Label retail edition, you can't just sell-up and buy this instead. They've pretty-much guaranteed themselves lots of double-dipping. Or even triple-dipping, since the Black Label DLC adds extra Achievements to Ver1.5, plus the ability to edit the soundtrack.

In short, many are going to want to have every last play mode, achievement and option available, and to do that, they'll need to buy DFK 1.5, the Black Label DLC and the retail version. They'll also need to make sure their copy of DFK 1.5 is a first print or Limited Edition as they come with a DLC code for yet another mode - Ver1.51!

Anyway, I haven't spent much time with it yet, but "KetsuiPachi" seems awesome. Well worth getting the retail version for.

I think a bomb style 1cc might be on the cards here.

Just got the below score on Power Style, without autobomb.

If anyone's interested in a youtube vid showing said run, I saved the replay.

              Cracking score buddy

Good 1st impressions too...wish I'd ordered this now as well

May have to purge some old games to fund it

Practice practice practice good man. Keep those hyper stocks handy for those bullet patterns you just can't dodge, wipe them all out with your spread shot, and then manually disengage your hyper the moment you want to clear the screen of bullets.

There's a massive scoring trick in defeating a boss with a full red gauge. The items the boss drops are worth so, so so so much more if you've got a maxed out gauge.

I keep getting so close to defeating stage 3 and 4 boss with a maxed out gauge but I can never quite do it... If I can nail those down I reckon i'll have an easier time beating that score.

God I love this game. Absolutely perfect scoring system. I've not touched the Daifukketsui arrange mode yet simply because the more I played Ketsui, the more I hated it's scoring system and the way it would repeatedly kick you in the balls with bullets you can't see coming. >_<

I can't understand how people can play in bomb style though! I tried it thinking it would be easier than power style and I just can't get to grips with it. I'll be sticking with power style. Now to try and figure out how the hell I can get through those circle lasers of death on the final area...

^ the info about being in red mode when taking out the bosses works really well in ketsui mode too.

yeah, i've been playing it most of the day and loving it. seems like it shares a lot of stuff from black label from Silvergun's great posts above but with the ketsui scoring system bolted on the top, and ketsui's scoring system is one of the best/most fun imo. getting 10 chips increases the red meter really quickly.

Doh! I just was not getting this new version at all earlier. Thanks for the opening post I'll try it holding the two shot buttons tomorrow. I was pressing normal shot and bomb to no effect.

Thought I would try the black label stuff before Ketsupachi mode though. It will have to wait until I have a bit more time to devote to my 360.

As an aside this game engine Cave are now using for their 360 ports is the business. All the screen options etc are pretty handy and the games look and sound fantastic.
Arguably the most comprehensive options of any 360 shooter maybe apart from Raiden Fighters.

This is the game's core scoring mechanic. Quite simply, no red gauge = no scoring.

I'm going to try getting something recorded and put online for tomorrow morning so i'll post the youtube vids up on here the moment they're done.

Once you turn that rank gauge red for the first time, there's no going back. Although it makes the game harder, its just so much more fun when you can cancel hundreds of bullets at a time and Hyper almost at will. Killing the Bosses with a maxed-out gauge also gives your score a HUGE boost.

Woooooo, I finally got around to getting my videos sorted out. Had to record video from phone and record audio track seperately. Love the way that VirtualDub won't open MOV files, so I had to convert that mov, then add the audio track and compress it, then split the file off. >_<

I'll post the videos here as soon as they're processed, i've got them all queued up now.

The camera's wonky, sorry about that.

Also ended up accidently duplicating the ends of each level, nevermind.

                              Stage 1

                              Stage 2

Stage 3 - AKA 'How to completely **** up a boss bonus and completely rage'

Stage 4 - AKA 'How to completely **** up a boss bonus and completely rage 2 - The Sequel'

                              Stage 5 and game over.
