Taken from official forums:
You cannot invite/join a friend automatically, you can only set one up, by one of you going into host a co op match, and then another one joins a co op match
However the two of you might be put onto different severs, so the joining person needs to restart the demo and hopefully be put onto the same server, then they can join the match

At least we wont have to do this when its out, I do wonder why they didnt at least allow proper invites in the demo, the drop in drop out, fair enough if that wasnt ready, but surely the bog standard inviting someone to a game should work!
