Rolling Thunder, Shinobi & Shadow Dancer (ARCADE)

From a retro point of view Rolling Thunder holds special merit, because it was the first in this rather interesting sub-genre. However for me it?s always been about Shinobi. I can?t describe just how much I love this game, it?s just so perfect. Shadow Dancer was also good, but the whole Ninja Dog thing was a step too far imo.

I?m seriously thinking about picking up one of these on PCB, but I?ve not played enough of Rolling Thunder or Shadow Dancer to know whether they?re worth the bucks should one surface on ebay.

What are peoples opinions on these three and perhaps more importantly why has this type of game been left on the touchline for so long?

rolling thunder wasok butgot really annoying cos it was insanley difficult for me. I jus found it really hard.

Shinobi was a classic from the start and the difficulty curve was cranked up a few notches in my opinion.

Shadow Dancer was shinobi with a gimmick ie the wolf.

Of the 3 id say shinobi had the edge, it was jus so refreahsing at the time. But then thats jus how i felt when i was playing them inthe day. I couldnt play them now cos they would juspiss me off too much! This why i feel games like this arent made today. Becasue peeps these days jus dont have the patience of time to bother. Its this MTV generation we've spawned, and its only gonna get worse as speed becomes more of an issue in out daily lives.

Oddly enough, I was going to PM you with some questions, so we'll do a trade

Rolling Thunder I haven't played for years on arcade. I remember it being good, though. I played the MD version recently, and it was pretty basic and rough. I would be surprised if, these days, it was better than Saturn Elevator Action Returns, so you might want to spend your money on that if you don't have it.

Shadow Dancer on the arcade is a great game. For me, it isn't quite the game Shinobi III (MD) is, but it's a good romp.

Shinobi (arcade) is a different matter, though. There's nothing to touch it on home consoles (except for maybe a MAMEd version, I guess, but where's the soul in that?)
You cannot get a version of Shinobi on a home console - including the sequels - that's as good as arc Shinobi. They are all either graphically inferior or missing elements of gameplay/levels in some way. Buy it ^^

For what its worth I think Rolling Thunder 1 & 2 both piss on Shinobi, but RT1 is extra special.

I always though the GameGear Shinobi was the best.

112 I tend to agree, and I see you're point about the MTV generation, however take a look at what Capcom have achieved with Viewtiful Joe. A completely fresh side scrolling beatemup.

I'm looking for something similar here. Just so long as the gameplay is left largely untouched (It's still superb). Any of these games with a graphical update would sell on GBA I'm sure. Hell I don't even care if they change the characters to match with whatever the "Kidz" are into now.

Maybe I'm out of touch with the series, but I remember nothing in Rolling Thunder that makes it better than Shinobi. How accurate (in terms of structure, not gfx) is the MD version to the arcade?

As for GG Shinobi, it's second on my list after Arc Shinobi (with Shinobi III a close third). GG is more 'modern' and varied, is wonderfully structured, but it's not 'pure' Shniobi, as it were. Brilliant, but not the milestone the arcade game is.

Ive jus realised how bad my typing is on my earlier post, but im too lazy to re-type in the edit option......... anyways I agree GG shinobi was an excellent game. I think i understand what trebs is saying - the original shinobi jus oozed some form of class which cant be touched. Its like Street fighter 2 compared to say super street fighter 2 - it good but it jus aint the same..............

Shinobi took RT's formula and refined it with verve and style. As an arcade game from back in the day, it was damn near perfect.

Not only that, but stage 2.3 with the ninjas (the warehouse one where you ascend platform and boxes) had one of the best game tunes ever.

Oh yes, that stage is a personal favourite of mine. Definately one of the best in the game. God I need this on PCB now! Mame just doesn't cut it.

Shinobi also has some superb level design, kooky music and (for the time) amazing bosses. Very 'flowy' gameplay as well. You could go through almost any level without stopping once.

Yeah that was pretty cool wasn't it after all of the madness of the earlier bosses this little dude comes out. And then kicks your ass till it bleeds.

For style I'd have to go with the logistics base boss, not the crap bit with the up and down head, but the bit just before with those stacked up rotating shrines I mean wtf was all that about, I never could get the technique right where you could bounce your way through, removing the need to use up the magic.

btw. I remember Shadow Dancer on the Amiga being really rather good. Might crack it out sometime and have a go.

I have MD Shadow Dancer, and it's really rawther good :: smokes pipe ::
Doesn't touch the genius that is Shinobi III, though. After the original, then the tangential GG Shinobi, III is the greatest and most satisfying Shinobi title, IMHO. It has fantastic level design and superb physics, as well as a totally satisfying range of moves and attack options.

Completely in tune with the Shinobi ethic, yet moves the series forward a great deal.
