I remember finishing it on the hard mode, just the action levels. After the end credits, it comes up saying "you are the best player". At the time i thought this game was amazing and looking at the pics & movie, brings back the memories. This was one of my first jap snes games with Pilotwings, F-zero, Gradius, Final Fight and Bombuzal (****) which i got free with the snes.

This is a fantasic topic, I second the need for a 'retro game' thread, this has given me many happy memories of a fantastic game. Considering this was a launch title, it's very impressive. How come launch titles don't impress like this these days?

I remember seeing the import review in Mean Machines and feeling really depressed as I only owned a Megadrive at the time! When the SNES was officially released over here it was one of the first games I got and I loved every second of it. The end boss battle is a bitch, though. And the music...

Just to clear something up, was the music re-arranged for the PAL version? The first version I owned was the PAL one and the first level (woods) had the really cool opening track everyone remembers, but the second level (caves) had a different track. I've now got the Japanese version and the cave level features the same music as the woods level.

      Any ideas?

The US version has different music in the caves too, that's what I'm playing in the emulator. I'll grab the music if you want, for comparison. I don't have the Japanese version to check.

I don't like the caves music so much, the heated frenzy of the first levels music is much better

          Done!

You can see the (silent) ending movie here (8mb)...

I recorded the input too but it doesn't work 'cos a couple of the bosses alter their patterns and it ****s up the game I died though, the wheel boss is a right bast. He got me and so did Tanzra.

A few more screenshots of the final bits...

It has been good playing ActRaiser again. It's not a bad title overall and I enjoyed the sim-mode, which is hard work in places. There's just enough there to break up the platform sections nicely, which prove to be an enjoyable romp in their own right. The music is memorable and the graphics are of very high quality. Bosses are worth a mention for their large graphics and challenging attacks.

You have proven how great Actraiser is. Effective graphics, stirring music and exciting gameplay make a true classic.

I had forgotten how cool the last level is, looks even better than I recall. I have just started playing itagain, because ProEvo4 is taking-up all my time.

Lets pray that all the rumours over the years about No3 finally come true and a new Actraiser game is made.

Does all this talk of more music tracks mean the U.S and Pal carts were higher megs? It sounds like they held some of the tracks back for the Jap release and then went for more memory to allow all the music tracks for the other territories.

I dunno, the caves music track gets used several times through the game so maybe it was just a change of music? Maybe comparing ROM sizes is a valid way to tell.

I can't "rip" the music through the emulator, I thought I could; got it confused with the Megadrive emu.

Commander, you probably know of this site, but if you didn't here is the link:

You will find all the Actraiser tunes there, I made a c.d of them. 8)

Nice one man, I'm sure there are folk who didn't know about that site. I think I've actually got the SNES music somewhere, proper SNES audio rather than midi files.

Gonna decide on a retro-game for next month. Any thoughts, then lets hear them. We can draw a shortlist.

I'm still playing through Secret of Mana and loving every minute of it. I'm about 30% through I reckon. Anyone up for playing this one as well? I realise many people here will have already finished it 10 times (in a row) but surely it can't be played too many times :-)

If SNES I'd say maybe Chrono Trigger or Shadowrun, but I think I'd like to have a go at 1 crediting Gynoug (wings of wor I think over here) for Megadrive.

Big RPG's are pushing it - we really want games that we can play from start to finish in a few days.

Oh I thought it was going to be monthly or fortnightly, something like that.

Here we go kingston, this is where I get most of my music from. They're direct game rips and you'll need some plugins to play on Winamp or whatever.

Cheers mate, the midi files are also good, on my SB card they sound excellent.
