The original white system, along with both Core Grafx I and II offer CD support through the rear expansion connector. If you're really not after that capability you could go for a Shuttle, 'cos it looks like a spaceship, which is awesome and rather unique.

Oh I'm aware of that yes. Don't the Core Grafx I and II have native RGB though?

      Comment

Nope, you'll have to mod them for RGB. Although with the Core systems you have the choice of getting it directly from the Hu6260 chip or the expansion connector.

Alright. They still need the RF modulator removing then like the base unit?

No they don't. The saturn's feels different. I have both right in front of me. Maybe the UK pads are the same but the ones over here aren't. Also, there are two styles of D-pad on the Mega Drive 3 button pad. One is slightly raised and feels like ****e. Far too lose IMO. I do like the Mega Drive 6 button pad but maybe it's a little too small for me.

I believe there are two different types of 6 button pad too. One has oversized buttons if I remember correctly.

And I mean the dpad piece is the same part, I think.

That's the pad which came with the Genesis 3, it's not a real Sega pad though, you'll see 3rd party versions of it from time to time.

Majesco distributed and manufactured the Genesis 3 iirc so they probably bought a load of them and rebranded them with the Sega logo. The d-pads on them are ****e though, they're raised far to high and they hurt your thumbs a bit as the plastic is too sharp.

Thanks Phar, that's good to know.

The GameCube controller has never been bettered in my opinion, far and away the best analogue controller created. It's just lucky there aren't many games that you'd want to use the d-pad on it for!

Some of the UK Megadrive 3 button pads had a horrible, horrible d-pad, so unresponsive. The alternate ones were a lot better. For me the PSX pads without the analogue sticks are OK, not great, one good thing is they're almost indestructible and can take a good beating. The d-pad on the PS1 dual shocks were horrible. I always hated the gap in the centre of the d-pad though, and I think with the PS2 pads they improved the feel of the d-pad a bit. In the past the MD 6 button pad was my all time favourite d-pad, but they're probably a bit small now. I remember giving away a couple, I wish I had kept them.

Also worth pointing out that there were actually two versions of the Jaguar pad that look identical. One had a really awful d-pad that was very clicky and made it hard to input diagonals smoothly, but the other one was really loose and is rather excellent. A lot of people slate it because they think all of them are the clicky type.

I think the Jag pad is poor because it's so awful in design and feels horrid in the hands. Not comfortable at all and the the button layout feels off to me. The 3D0 pad was another ****ty pad now that I think about it.

Maybe I had one of the ones with a crappy d-pad cause I hated the MD six button pads, they were the wrong shape and buttons felt rubbish, I can never understand why people rate them..

Saturn pad is ok but I prefer the SNES pad for most games, the button layout just makes more sense on a pad..

But I use a stick for fighters
