I can fully understand... even though a lot of the US Cube games I bought were in the $5-15 region each, I still figure that's about 5000 grand (pounds) I've spent on it. But that was over the space of 3-4 years so it wasn't that much of an outlay in time, something like 100 quid per month on average.

As for the PS1, I know someone with a complete US set (including almost all variants!) so that is quite possible too...

Well, it's one of the better known Japanese Superguns. You can see some pictures and details of an older version here

They're not cheap (around £130 new?), GP over at www.gamengai.com/forsale.php can get you one at a slight markup but with the shipping on that it adds up to a lot of money. I got mine from the forums here.

Some mint copies of Mario. Pyramids, Radar and MS Puzzle are all a bit mediocre.

Catrap got some decent reviews, but it's a bit of a chore to do all the levels.

Starting down the treacherous and financially ruinous path of collecting old computer games. Mainly RPGs, and mainly stuff I never had at the time because I didn't get a PC until 2001. I'll be playing them in DOSBox, but with this stuff you've really got to have the books, maps and trinkets

Nice find. I've just got a complete 5.25 copy of Darklands and should have Ultima VII: The Black Gate and Master of Magic arriving soon ( surface mail.. )

But it looks perfect! I can't get hold of an old Jamma cab here, so was looking at building one. Using a Supergun would allow me to plug in original jamma boards and interface to a pc for emus. Would save me quite a bit of effort on the project.

                    Join the dark side

But true, there's a lot of fun, value and coolness about many of the old packages. I do have complete Ultimas 1-6 here for the C64 for example (with the stuff for U5 as shown).

Come to Japan mate. We are always getting free stuff. With Bio Hazard Umbrella Chronicles I got a Bio Hazard leather wallet. Ghost Squad came with a very nice pin badge in a case. No More Heroes came with a metal replica of the main weapon. Dekatora Matsuri came with a model truck. There are loads of other free gifts too.

It's different though, I think. In the old days you used to get a bunch of stuff by default that was all to do with the game, whether it be a lavish manual, novella, or cloth map - it was all stuff with a direct impact, stuff that drew you deeper into the gameworld. Some of the modern special editions are nice, but essentially it comes down to meaningless paraphernalia. I remember reading the novellas that came with Elite, Starglider and Driller among others, and they really set me in those worlds. A limitation of the hardware of the time maybe, but it seemed that developers were truly interested in world-building and they'd do that through those external means.

That's partly why old computer games have a much stronger nostalgic pull for me than console games. I'm not knocking console collecting at all, but when I buy an Amiga or PC game and I get that kind of stuff in it, it feels like it's worth having as an item as well as a favourite old game to play.
