Wow, that's a very special find Adam!!! First actual copy I've heard of. Did you buy it from the UK? The only actual images I've ever seen of that and the Home Alone SMSII variant were in a German magazine.

Yeah UK, went on my first solo drive since passing my driving test to a few indie gameshops near by and found this. A reward for passing the driving test I must say!

Wasn't aware of the Home Alone one though. That makes three right including Sonic 2?

Am I right to assume these were store display boxes then?

Damn it! I bet you got it from one of the shops I used to visit on a weekly basis....that'll teach me to take a break from collecting .

Yeah there's three of these that are known about, but before this copy of Batman Returns only Sonic 2 had actually surfaced. Home Alone will be even harder to find I expect being a rarer game to start with.

I think they were some kind of sales experiment rather than store display boxes, more like the NTSC blue cart re-releases. They were probably trying to sell more SMS 2's, by rebranding some of the popular games and movie tie-ins. There is possibly a hell of a lot more games that have this kind of variation, if it's taken 20 years for yours to surface who knows what else is out there .

            Some stuff from Germany

Got all of these for a steal but i'm puzzled about the Carmen game never seen that "boxart" before (or lack of it)

The infrared station for Playstation was cool never seen one like it and at 1 euro it was a bargain.

If I'm not mistaken, its the Genesis version that came bundled with a book in a slipcase. Thats just the artwork on the box under the slipcase. I'm not 100% on this though...

I used to think that too until I got the NTSC pack with the encyclopedia, it has a normal cover unfortunately (see pic below) so it isn't from that set. If anyone ever does know what it is though I'd love to know as I have a copy in my collection too

Tell me about it, an Oz guy just posted his collection on sega8bit and I noticed a load more SMS variations I need. U.S. Gold SMS games got a different cover in Oz by the looks of it but I never noticed until seeing the spines as the front covers look the same.

Doubt i'll ever finish my collection .

I am very happy to limit my variants to the spines or significant differences - it's more for show and completion sake. Only a couple to go now...THEN its all over.
