I had played every game in the series when it came out, even the arcade. Ridge V is my personal favourite. Still playing it once a month at least almost 12 years later.

I like to put on 90s music and play the night time track, reminds me of sitting in the back seat of my dad's car at night, playing Pokemon while he drove us to his house in Wales every weekend.
It was a chilled out, ambient Grand Tour of a racer, where you drift through beautiful night time cities or pastel coloured countryside.

Type 4 towers above everything else, followed by the original Ridge Racer and then Rage.

It's like a see through electric sax solo where the others are synths and lazer shows.
Edge done a Time Extended on Ridge Racer Revolution a few years back and talked about the hallmarks of the original series. They compared it to the 90?s club scene where the original is the start of the night, Revolution is the dizzy high, Rage is the dark and oppressive Sunday comedown and Type 4 is the peaceful and reinvigorating Sunday afternoon.
It?s quite an appropriate description of the themes of the PSone games.

Fair enough criticism though, it had a simple structure but had loads of great courses in comparison to the limited selection on offer in earlier games.
