    Area 88 / UN Squadron - what a great f***ing game

Have just been playing this. What a blinder. Shame you can't save your game on a SNES, but I keep going back to this, and Parodius, again and again. Can't do any pictures, but maybe someone can oblige?

Proved that SNES/SFC could do shooters in the same league as the MD, in my opinion.

    LOVE THIS GAME.

I concur, an absolutely sweet game. The lack of game does does stink and it's a fairly lengthly game. I never did beat that last boss...

The high point for me was the ridiculously catchy music at the begining of the sea level.

Indeed, very good game. I prefer Parodius because of the humor and sheer nonsense, but UN Squadron remains completely awesome.

I was only able to complete it once, though -- the boss of that big cave level keeps eating my credits no matter what I do... The only way to beat it seems to be to buy an YF23 and to use gunpods, and even then it's freakin' hard to beat.

Speaking of which, what planes do you guys use? My usual progression usually is F-8 -> A-10 -> YF23 -> F-200 (well, provided I survive that cave encounter, that is).

I don't think I ever beat the last boss either. Top game.

You can fly up and fit in between the gap on the left hand side of the cave level boss, it requires a helluva lot of practice although saves buying a crap plane.

As for the last boss, when his sensitive part opens up simply bomb/napalm the hell out of it, then Mega Crush it twice for good measure. The final $1m plane can carry ****-loads of weapons.

I think I played this game more than SFII back in '91/'92. Good times - The best time to be a gamer IMO with Mario world and LttP and a tons of other instant classics. I knew they were all going to be AAA classics the moment I played them, I was only 10/11 back then too.

The SNES is my favourite console to this day still. I still haven't picked up an NTSC machine! Might as well find an old PAL console to modify as I can't be arsed buying all my games again.

I would LOVE to play this game again! This not get a release on the GBA? Shocking if it didn't.

I love the music from stage 1 & the ending, some of the best early 90's Capcom tunes.

Surprisingly as many of you say it's tough, it was the only SFC shooter I could 1CC.

Easily the best shooter on the system.

I'll write one - Could probably do it off of memory I've played it that much.

Might as well do some of the others too - one at a time though. I'll start tomorrow.

Too bad I don't have any recording facilities or else I could make MP3s to match.

Yep, absolutely terrific game (though I needed a hand written translation from a mate at the time as I got Area 88!). Definitely one of the best on the SNES, and I did manage to beat it back in the day too. Fab music as many people have noted

No, but then would u dare release a port of an old game on a handheld format if u knew the reaction it gets on here? :P

God I love this game... but I'm soooo crap at it

Are there any differences between the US and JAP versions?

This i one of my all time favourite games, i played it to death back when i got it, it was the first game i got with my imported super famicom. I managed to finish it on hard in 1 life, but i never managed to do it on gamer, which was an extra hard difficulty you could get with a cheat. The cave boss always beat me on that setting.

Worst of all though i actually got this out today and my super famicom doesn't want to play for some reason, it just does nothing. I'm really gutted. [edited to say that bizarely during making this post my SFC came back to life!]

Also as far as the music goes i used to have the soundtrack cd for the arcade version, i'll have to try and find it.
