First console game you fully mastered

Well for me it has to be Wonderboy III The Dragon's Trap on the SMS. I remember at the time there was a little extra review mag specifically of this game (I think it was a freebie with a C&VG)..it scored a whopping 97%. I carried this around with me wherever I went...just to look at the magnificence that was this game. Then Christmas morning, wrapping off, into the SMS it went...and boy did I play it..and play it...and play it. Sure I'd been into games beforehand and had played a fair few (Acorn, SMS, NES etc). But this was something else. And I owned it big time. Every secret room, chest, goodie, everything..I became the master (and tbh still am). It just seemed so huge..free roaming..gorgeous sound/graphics...the ultimate gaming experience that any 10-12 year old boy could wish for.

Super Mario World. Not the hardest game to master, but I could rip through nearly all the levels "with style" (not missing a jump etc) because I played it so much. Super Mario Kart is another game that got thrashed to within an inch of it's life. Those were the days.

Probably Street Fighter II on the SNES. I think the timing was just right: me and my friends all had it, we all had enough spare time to play it, and we all got pretty good pretty fast. I think there might have been a whole year where i *only* played SF2 and Mario Kart!!

at the time it would of been the original streetfighter 2 on snes. i thought i was the man but compared to how i play i now i sucked then. that leaves super ghouls and ghosts another capcom classic. non stop, day in and day out. it felt so good playing this game i was convinvced if i ever felt sick, all id need to do was play this game and feel better. every aspect mastered. having to complete the game twice wasnt a problem - it was a pleasure

i've cracked a few... Fatal Fury 2 and Mortal Kombat 1 & 2 (arcade) but not quite the same when they appeared on the consoles.

but Castlevania IV (snes) Ridge Racer (PSone) are two games i feel i mastered.
that was years ago and i'm sure i'll fall short now.

I have always been good at platformers - mastered Ghouls And Ghosts and the Mario games back in the day, but the one I am really special on is Bubble Bobble. Finished that without losing a life once.

I think I have mastered California Games - am pretty excellent on that.
Also like to think I am pretty tasty on Everybody's Golf. That is borne from hours of perfecting every hole, restarting after every bad shot, and basically being terribly anal about the whole thing.

Ah, now you mention Bubble Bobble, I was mint at Rainbow Islands. That was on the Amiga though.

Mine was Arkanoid (Breakout type game) on the Atari 800 XL. I could play that for ages before "dying". Over an hour at times.

Super Mario World for me, such a beautiful game to sit down and complete it its entirety.

SMB 1 and 3 on the NES were truly mastered and SMW on SFami.

Goldeneye on N64 took months to do all levels on all 3 difficulty settings, but I still wouldn't say I'd truly mastered it.

My mate at school was in the Daily Mirror for being one of the top 5 players in the UK with fastest lap times on SNES MarioKart, back in 1992/3.

dont know if it was the first, but i remember zooming through strider on the megadrive pretty easily any time i liked.

cant remember if i ever one-lifed it, but no continues was easy....i havent played it in years though. maybe its just an easy game in general.

i also used to think i was good at street fighter 2, and could easily beat all my friends, but now i know i was a bit crap, they must have all been useless.

edit, just remembered mario land on the gameboy. that definately was an easy game though. i used to guage how well i had done by how many million extra lives i could pick up on the way through.

I take it you've seen the vid of some gamer completing SMB3 as fast as is perhgaps possible...utter sickness...that level which is a kind of fixed speed scroller with many many cannons etc...just disgusting..the gamer gets like 200 lives jumping about etc

That video was a fake. The guy played it on an emulator practically one frame at a time doing quick-saves and restarting when he messed up. It did look very impressive though.

the first game I mastered was super the street fighters part 2 on the super the megadrive 1. I was so ultra amazing at that game that I could totally do all of the ryu's moves easily without so much as even thinking about it! My other gaming conquests were such cool games as super sonic the hedgehog 2. such an amazing and down right funky bloody game!
I am also so very in love with the contra game on the megadrive and also wonderboy when he enters the 4th monster world.
