    Ganbare goemon appreciation thread

This series of games is my most favourite series of all time.

My first experience with goemon was on the mono gameboy when i pestered microbyte into importing me a copy. I was totally hooked it just dripped japanese culture & madness, i spent hours playing the minigames in the shops & bursting into the womens section of the sauna to see those little ladies scream & grab for a towel.

When i finally got a super famicom i managed to get hold of all the goemon games for that & i found out they were just as mental as the gameboy versions. My favourite been goemon 2 where i got to control inpact in mode 7 battles it just didnt get any better.

Over the years i have nearly obtained every goemon game there is for all nintendo systems, just missing 1 gb game (wont get it as its ****) 1 gba game (same reasons as before) & 2 famicom games.

So any of you out there fans of the blue haired loony

I've only played the western ones, I used to have one of the Gameboy ones but didn't like it at all, the Super Nintendo ver was mint though, and I've got the 2 N64 versions as well. Great franchise which sadly seems to have fizzled out of late I especially loved all the arcade and mini games in it such as the original Gradius and an Air Hockey game, oo oo and horse racing happy days.

Goemon1 on the snes is one of my favourite games of all time. The graphics were and still are sumptuous and the gameplay is just plain fun; not forgetting the wonderful music!

Me and my best mate also enjoyed the sequels; though I admit to only recently playing no4 through emulation, it is a nice addition to the series.

The N64 version is fantastic: People unfairly saw it as an inferior version of Mario64, when it really is just a brilliant alternative full of imagination and great gameplay.

I have also played a PS1 version in 96 which was 2D and a nice game in its own right. I never really got far in to it, but it still had the same high production values, including excellent music.

I hope a really big exciting next-gen version gets made for the world market. If Konami can make one as fresh and fun as the original was back in 91, we will all be smiling!

thats such an amzing collection of goemon! i am jealous. I have all the SFC ones with strategy guides but your collection rules to death. Goemon 2 is my favourite of the series. THe music is amazing, almost as good as kikikikaikai.

I may consider parting with my perfect condition full colour japanes strategy guideds if you fancy it. I only have the guides to 1, 2 and 4 but if you want to trade for something nice and ps2 related or sfc related let me know.

Has anyone played the Goemon puzzle game that was released on the Super Famicom? It was an isometric puzzle game. I haven't seen it for years but would be interested if anyone has played it and if it's worth searching for.

ive played it and its good. its got ebisamaru in it. It uses a combination of pseudo 3D graphics with pre rendered sprites. It's very fast paced for a puzzler and requires some quick reflexes and skill. It's a good game and extremely underated.

I got quite far on it and it comes reccomended. the box is nice too.

I remember getting the first SFC Ganbare Goemon the week it came out in Japan. Up until then we'd all be wowed by stuff like Actraiser but this was completely different. The way it mixed Japanese myth, legend and modern pop culture was fantastic and even though things started to go downhill after the second SFC game I always tried to champion Goemon on SPlay and N64. There were some nice ideas on the N64 game but, for me, the controls ruined it.

Apparently some of the original SFC team went on to do Brave Fencer Musashi on PS1.

Do you really think 3 was that bad? I played through most of it in japanese and I thought it was great. there used to be a translation in progress for it so I bet that would be great seeing as it was a lot more rpg-ish than the others. 3 still had the mode 7 battles and the platforming sections were excellent,

I certainly agree with you on 4, that just wasn't up to scratch. then again, I think most of the good konami staff were probably working on ps1 and saturn stuff by then.

I wouldn't go as far as to say terrible but (and this is only my opinion) the games weren't as well crafted after the second SFC game.

I haven't played any PS Goemon. Maybe I should hunt them out.

I haven't played the psx versions but I saw the game for sale once and everthing looked prerendered and crappy on the box. I don't have a massive problem with that (I love mars matrix) but for a goemon game, I just thought 'no'.

Goemon belongs in 2D in my opinion but then, I am a 2D whore so my opinion is worth **** all in th real world.

From reading this so far, it seems people didn't actually dislike the N64 version. Am I the only one who thinks its one of the most awful games ever created?

From what I remember of it, it consisted of...

Leave town...wait 3 seconds...get attacked...repeat at least 20 times until you get until the next town. I mean, you got attacked regardless of your distance away from an enemy! It was just awful. Absolutely awful.

                            Just my two cents anyway.

*waits for Goemon fans to attack*

I can understand your point, the first N64 goemon was a little rough around the edges but been a fan i put up with it as it wasnt that bad. It had plenty of fun enviroments to explore & those groovy inpact battles.

The 2nd N64 goemon went back to its 2D roots with quite a tough little game, sadly there were no minigames in it which was a shame.

The 3rd N64 goemon is a bit of a fave of mine, its a boardgame where you battle using cards. It's very japanese intensive but pretty easy to learn how to play.

Konami are planning a bit of a goemon revival, they have remade/ported sfc goemon 1 & 2 to the gba with added extras which im getting for sure as i have dreamed about them coming to gba for years but i never really thought that it would happen.

Then theres the ds goemon thats comming soon as well (Yay)
