    Games that get it right

We, the gaming fraternity have put up with alot over the years. Games that promise the world and deliver nothing, games that look nice graphically but play awfully and games that are just pure stinkers from the very moment you flick the power switch.

Each format has suffered with poor quality control issues from time to time, some more so than others but occassionally, if you're lucky, you pick up a game that is just so perfect in every concievable way that it is a real joy and a pleasure to play that you don't really want it to complete it because you don't want it end.

I picked up a very good condition copy of Castle Of Illusion for the MD at a boot sale yesterday for a ?1...nothing unusual in that, it's a very common game but the entertainment value I got out of playing it ( nearly all day long yesterday ) is priceless.

What a game! It oozes quality from start to finish...nothing is wrong, everything is totally spot on. The graphics, music, enemy design, level layout, difficulty settings, secrets, sound FX and most importantly, playability.

Alright, this game isn't hard to complete but it's a lovely challenge and certainly should be held in high regard when it comes to great 16 Bit platform games.

Even the Walt Disney license is nice, I don't usually like games that feature already 'well known' characters, I much prefer original characters that are created for that game but with Castle Of Illusion you couldn't imagine it featuring anyone else but Micky.

Bloody amazing, I loved it when it first come out and I love it now and I'm pretty sure that if I played it in 50 years time, it would still keep me glued to my TV all over again.

So, what games do you feel this passionate about, I'm talking the cream of the crop, not the collectability but the bare bones, perfect gaming experience.

Castle of Illusion is an amazing game. And to think it was a first generation MD title, too! I recall being totally gobsmacked when I played it. I remember Mean Machines went ape**** over it and gave it a really high mark (and rightly so). Visually it's SNES-standard, and the follow up World of Illusion doesn't come close IMO.

    My personal picks would be:

Super Mario World (SNES) - Best platform game ever, everything was totally 100% spot on.

Castlevania SOTN (PSX) - 2D perfection

Strider (MD) - An improvement on the already brilliant arcade machine

Gunstar Heroes stands out for me. I just can't think how that game could possibly have been made better. The pacing, the graphics, the music, the bosses...

      A work of genius.

I would also rate Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga in the same category. When Treasure are on form, they are untouchable.

Garou mark of the wolves was so close to perfection, but I remember it was let down by one really, really lame character. What was his name? I forget. He had long ginger hair...

                I'm just kidding.

I think garou, KOF 98 and Street fighter zero 3 all got it right too.

                  How was it an improvement?

I'm not wishing to sound snappy, I'm just curious as to how you think the MD version was/is superior.

Indeed, I remember that badboy slowing down all over the place. It was almost like playing a Treasure game.

Graphically I prefer the MD version, Sega re-drew a lot of the sprites and they just seem to look better to me. The main sprite looks loads better. Granted there's slowdown (but nowhere near as much as in some games I could mention!) and even a bit of Master System-style sprite flicker in there but it just plays so damn well, even today. I recall playing the arcade version at roughly the same time and thinking the MD version was better. Perhaps time has warped my perception a little, but having playing the conversion of the Strider included with Strider 2 on the PSX my opinion remains the same.

i played a load of old MD games this year including strider, streets of rage 2, goldenaxe, and revenge of shinobi and i have to admit they bored me to tears i can't see why people love them so much. Maybe once they were good but now they are far away from being even decent.
