Everyone can have their opinion. I personally wouldn't play those right now if I was paid. Too much on the market that's more worthy of playing.

not even streets of rage? What kind of retroist are you?

        Is that even a word?

well anyhow I know what you mean and honestly - i'm not much of one. If I had more time, yeah - SOR I would play actually, they were good times - but in terms of prioritizing my gaming time now - the market seems to have so much on offer ATM that I wouldn't.

        My personal picks anyway for the subject matter;

Super Mario World - what can I say

Zelda OOT - same as above - just a flawless game.

Sonic the Hedgehog - great Mega Drive game - what a sexy title

Chrono Trigger? Maybe. But that rocked.

Goldeneye was near perfect IMO also.

GoldenEye is/was amazing, it's a product of it's time though and won't grow old gracefully as it's not perfect (the framerate). It'll always get surpassed by newer games as well. These games though, will always be great, and are still as good as they were on the day of release:

          Super Mario Kart
          Super Mario 64
          Super Mario Bros 3 & 4
          Metal Slug 1 & 3
          Radiant Silvergun
          Ghosts n' Goblins
          Rez
          Contra Hard Corps
          The Last Blade
          Super Monkey Ball
          Tetris

          Fanboy selection:
          Salamander

Gradius V & Biohazard 4 are too new to be included, but these are ones I see joining the list in the future...

exactly what i'm saying there are far more better games out there to take your time other than streets of rage, strider, goledaxe, etc. Personally i'm not going to waste much time on these games the experiance just seems empty and shallow in comparision with other great titles which i'd rather play. Personal opinion of course many others will disagree.

                      Mmh... I would say:

                      - Secret of Mana (only RPG-style game I've completed almost 10 times, including one complete 2-player playthrough -- absolutely stunning)
                      - Streets of Rage 2 (I've yet to see a beat 'em all that's better than this one)
                      - Rocket Knight Adventures (Beautiful. Fun. Full of humour. Throws one original idea your way every minute. Beats the crap out of both its SNES and MD sequels)
                      - Symphony of the Night (Best 2D game ever. And Ghost, that music...)
                      - Super Mario World ('nuff said)

                            I'd say
                            Nights
                            Samba De Amigo
                            Ecco the Dolphin
                            Paperboy
and finally Starfox for teh snes.

I think these games OOZE playability, and will never ever get old.

i played a load of old MD games this year including strider, streets of rage 2, goldenaxe, and revenge of shinobi and i have to admit they bored me to tears i can't see why people love them so much. Maybe once they were good but now they are far away from being even decent

Should have gone to (rose-tinted?) Specsavers The MD game was a fine conversion, but I always thought the colours looked a little washed out.

Plus there was quite a bit removed for the Sega game, including frames of animation, speech "You Dare Fight Me?" and certain creatures (the panther and at least one of the dinosaurs).

Amazingly it also managed to cram in more glitches (no small boast) than the coin-op (notably on the Amazon/Jungle stage). The end sequence with the Whale (Dolphin?) was replaced with the slightly dull scrolling bit in the MD, very poor.

In general Strider is (still) a good game, but not a great game, simply because like so many arcade titles/conversions of the time it lacks consistency (see also Capcom's own Bionic Commando and indeed Ghouls 'n Ghosts).

Granted, the first few levels are fantastically inventive, but by stage five the developer seems to have run out of steam and just cobbled together a real mess of a final area; made up of bits stolen from earlier sections. As for the showdown with Grand Master Meio (spelling), it ranks as one the biggest disappointments in gaming history.

                                No, no, no.

Anyway, getting on topic (finally), if you're looking for games that get it right, then try:

Shinobi (Arcade version only please, accept no alternative).

Rygar: Legendary Warrior (Arcade version. A super slick, side-scrolling action/platform title that deserves much more attention than it gets).

Kung-Fu Master (arcade version again. Hypnotically addictive side scrolling fighter, which starts to feel like some kind of virtual ballet once it clicks).
