Yeah but actually (Do)donpachi also got plagued by such flaws compared to the arcade.. except for the midlevel loading (which I believe only happens right before a boss in Geki?).

Heck yeah, especially the counter beam madness. It's so satisfying repelling the enemy boss beam with your own and then powering it up in the process.

I just got TF5 the other day and I'm quite liking it. Does look very dated but I kind of like the dodgy textures for some reason, and some of the 2d backgrounds are lovely (like the clouds on level 3).

I also got Donpachi for the Saturn and I'm pretty dissapointed with the sound quality and amounts of slowdown. DDP is a much better port.

My favourite saturn shooter has to be Layer Section though. Amazing game in every respect. Anyone know if LS2 is any use?

^^If you mean Ray Storm, then yes in order. Dunno about the Saturn version (was on System11 afaik) but the PSX version is one of my all time favourite games.....the pal version too, i cant remember exactly why, but there was something irksome about the Simple series JPN version, maybe the offer of too much configuration ruined it.

Whatever, pal Raystorm is out there with the greats....graphics, game, style & sound.

yeah, I love layer section! music/gameplay/action is top notch!
Only other shooter for saturn I've played is TF5, and I think it's so-so. Haven't spent much time with it, though.

oh yeah, is the saturn version better than the arcade rayforce(or gunlock)? when I play it through mame, there is a lot of slowdown, and I don't think it's because of my pc. also, the resolution is 320x240ish i think.

Raystorm is a real gem of a game. Dunno how the Saturn version fares when compared to the excellent PSX port, I guess a lot of the transparency effects will be lost.

Saturn Layer Section II is ugly.

Wooo - Raystorm - excellent game - got it at the car boot on sunday.

Have just lost my Jap Saturn shooter virginity by purchasing my first ever example of the genre....Souky. Can't wait to recieve it. As a first Saturn shooter, did I do goood? Did I?

I've got Layer Section II (Ray Storm) on the Saturn. Its the same as the PSX but with some major sacrifices. The transparencies are gone for the most part, the textures are low and the slowdown is pretty bad in parts. The cool feature though is that they have added CG movie sections and the 2nd level still has transparent water

You did very good my friend. Souky is an excellent game, tough as nails but excellent all the same. Sets you up nicely for the other Raizing shooters, too.

Souky is a great shooter and one of the best looking at that.

Hmmm, might give Layer Section 2 a miss then. I think Batsugan may be my next purchase.

What's GUARDIAN FORCE like? Sounds interesting with the changing directions 'n stuff...

Hmm, I have Guardian Firce but have never really played it that much. Here's my comments from my site review of it.

The game is quite a challenge with pretty enough graphics but the audio is a bit weak which is not a good thing when it comes to shooters. Over all though it's quite a nice little game that you may want to look in to.
So in other words its ok but nothing out of this world.
