    Sports games

I recently picked up the wonderful Decathlete for Saturn, and I enjoyed the accessible, fun experience, which reminded me of when I first played other multi-sport titles like Daley Thompson (!) and Cali Games.

As well as this, I took 2020 Baseball off Baseley09's hands, and am enjoying this for it's stripped down sports majesty.

Has anyone else got any recommendations of good retro sports games? Bear in mind I already have the awesome Everybody's Golf, but was thinking about the numerous baseball games out there, volleyball, anything.

If you liked Decathlete you should give Winter Heat a go.

Have seen that all over the place down here. Will grab it today if I get a chance. Apart from the SNES and MD versions, are there any other decent ports of the superb NBA Jam?

The 32x version is pretty good.

And you need a neo turfmasters/btg for the mvs and pocket. PGA 2 os pretty good, and I really like Boogie Woogie Bowling (10 pin).

I love the Internation Track n Field game on PS1, if you use ninja techniques that game is a monster. sub-7 seconds 100m is possible.

I thought Winter heat was a bit crap, half of the events seem to play themselves, and it looks especially blocky and jerky compared to Decathlete (as it would, being 30fps/low-res compared to 60fps/high-res).

The NBA Jam games went on for years and years, there's good versions on the Dreamcast even (NBA on NBC was the last I think). If you like those then the NFL Blitz games (also on DC) are fun too. Sports Jam is alright too, although I only like about 5 of the events (the free kicks event is great). Also the NBA/NFL/NHL2K2 games are excellent, but obviously more sim than arcade. Both the Konami Track and Field and Sega Virtua Athlete games are crap.

Baseball Stars 2 is the best Neo sports game (Neo Turf Masters being close), lamping the pitcher after being hit by the ball is always funny.

EDIT: Plus Nettou Golf on DC is also great, if a bit hard to find.

Still one of my faves, a Neo classic!

                Seeing as were in retro..............

ISS on Snes is still a great game of soccer > most 3d soccer made.

Seibu Super Cup Soccer is my fave arcade soccer............I guess Numan Athletics comes under sports, another calssic jamma fun.

In my opinion SS:Neo Cup 98, League Bowling and Baseball Stars 2 on the AES/MVS are pretty decent if your after some arcadey sports fun.

Absolutely, how could I forget that?!

I always preferred the first version, the 2 in 1 version with John Madden is probably my fave MD cart ever, especially on 2 player co-op. I remember how it would very occasionally crash, and dump some hex address diagnostics on the screen, as if the average Joe was meant to be able to do anything about it

The original EA hockey, I think I played more than any game before or since.

For coin-op, you can't beat Football Champ (Hat Trick Hero in Japan/SNES), the rare Super Shot was one of the coolest things I've seen in a game.

Windjammers on Neo Geo is excellent fun with 2 players, pity the matches are so damn short. I love all the epilepsy inducing flashy lights. Soccer Brawl and Sidekicks 1 are also great.

EA Hockey 93 on the Megadrive is another favourate of mine, I used to play it every day back in college instead of actually doing work.

Track and Field is so much fun in multiplayer, we tried so many different implements to mash those buttons ever faster. We eventually settled on the rounded sides of towel rail brackets.

Don't get PGA Tour Golf 96 for SNES. Even with a co-processor in it it still takes 10 years to do anything.

I was playing Baseball Stars 2 on the Neo the other day- bloody brilliant!

Sega Sports Jam on the DC is a good game. It has a nice variety of mini-games, and in multi-player it's a real laugh!
