SFC games that smells of stale tobacco

All my SFC games have been uber fresh. Until today.

Any suggestions on how to rid a SFC box of a very strong tobacco smell?

Ive wiped the box down with a damp cloth. Dried it. Left it by a big fan for some airflow. Still stinky.

Do lots of Japanese people still smoke? Or is it the retro shop owners who are chain smokers?

    Anyone else have smokey games?

I got couple of promo items with smelly boxes...
I just hung them dry in the garage for few weeks and it kind of reduced the smell by big margin - but never completely...

Well there are still a lot of smokers in Japan and they practically light up every where - I once was at the small sushi bar and guys at both side as well as behind and in front all light up at the same time... it wasn't funny and I had to leave before I finish my dishes 'coz I couldn't stand the smell...

Damn. The smelly game in question is a rather nice copy of Macross Scarmbled Valkyrie (SFC). The cart is okay but the box and manual really smell.

I got it at a very fair price so even if I chuck out the packaging I wont feel ripped off. But half the fun of retro gaming is stockpiling these lovely old boxes. Throwing one out would be near blasphemy in my books.

      DAMN MY SENSITIVE NOSE!!!

I suppose spraying it with something else is asking for trouble (noice - now its smokey flowers!!)

try to hang them where you have a lot of air movement but no sunlight and see if that reduces the smell?

I have a nice small room behind the garage and it has this huge mesh windows at both side for the excellent ventilation... I also use it as the temp. air brushing both as well..

yeah. Thanks. Ill give that a try. Problem is though when I put it back into a box (where all my games end up - ie storage) the smell is likely to return. Maybe I keep it in a sealed bag away from my main collection. At least that way everything wont get smelly

Counterattack it with another smell: Fart on it

It works for shoes, so it may work for this.

              Cat litter.

If you ever get bad stinky shoes, put some cat litter in them and leave them overnight. Try lying the manual in some*.

*note: pre-owned cat litter may had an adverse effect.

I have N64 Mahjong Master which absolutely reeks of cigs, which is great in a way coz it conjures up an image of this lonely salaryman sitting in his small room playing mahjong and smoking 80 a day while getting drunk.

I'm not sure that there is anything you can really do to get rid of it. But following the advice given by the guys might reduce it. Hope it works mate

Maybe spray it with that tabacco odour neutrilising air freshener you can get, cant think what is called though? Spay it onto a cloth first and wipe the cart with it. WARNING.No idea if this advice will work. Do i win five pounds?

I recently bought a load of old PS1 and N64 games from Crime Convertors recently. The boxes were all fag stained yellow and stank. I then bought a load of Johnson baby wipes and cleaned them all up a treat - The N64 cardboard boxes came up a treat, don't rub too hard in one place though as the ink starts to come off. I wiped them clean/dry with a microfibre cloth. They smell lovely too lol

I wish i'd taken some photos before and after - but the crap that came off the boxes was unvbelievable! One pristine looking baby wipe was rendered fag ash yellowy brown after cleaning a couple of N64 and PS1 cases...

                      Hope that helps

You can stick em in a drawer with some of those smelly clothes freshening thingies for a few days. Might work?

You know those things you get too put in the tumble dryer.....bounce, and also the things that you put in the drawer like el mado gearo says, they work. All you have to do is put them in an empty box for around two weeks and that should clear it up, if not repaet again with fresh bounce and smelly clothes things until the smell is gobne, this prevnts you from damaging the box as well, with wet cloths,etc...

This honestly does work, done it with several original famicom cart boxes.

I wouldn't mess too much with such a tasty title. Have you thought of taking up smoking instead?
I like to think of tabacco smelling games as all part of the character. But I fear the day when we have to add a tabacco smell rating along with the presence of spine/registration card. Still nicotine is probably necessary to beat Macross....

                              Peter,
