    Great list of games haha.

    Some others perhaps...

    Captain Silver
    Valis series
    Ninja Spirit
    Kaze Kiri
    Genpei Tomaden (2nd one moreso)
    Schbibin Man 1 and 3
    Son Son II

Pushing it too far with some of the Capcom fighters...DnD, Tenchi Kurau etc?

Edit Lynx Rygar is worth a look too. Very different to the NES version, much closer to the arcade.

Ah Valis. Of course! Thanks for reminding me. I had added a couple of these without seeing your post. But yeah, keep em coming!

Trying to limit the games to non-run & gun, and no traversing in and out of the foreground (like Golden Axe, for example).

Question: The Wonder Boy games qualify, right? Well all except the one where you traverse on a Skateboard and unlesss Im mistaken,. wasn't Monster Lair on Megadrive a bit of a mess? Didn;t it have shmup sections? I may be mistaken though.

I'd count the Wonder Boy games haha.

The first (skateboard) and Monster Lair are pushing it. Lair does have shmup bits.

The rest are classics and probably just about fit. RPG elements, platform, action, adventure, slashing at stuff!

Wonderboy in Monster Land (already mentioned)
Wonderboy III The Dragon's Trap (one of the best games ever)
        Wonderboy in Monster World
        Monster World IV

Mad Stalker Full Metal Forth (/Force)?

Edit - just seen your updated list. Can't believe I forgot so many PCE games. Really like Iga Ninden too. And FA. And Bonze.

Thanks to this thread I've been playing Shinobi 3 the last few weeks trying to finish it on 1 continue, that house of traps (round 6 of 7) was brutal to get through along with its boss, in the end i save scummed my route through it to write down the path on a post-it note for a future run. Aside from that the bosses have been pretty fair with bio weapon head thing give me the most trouble with the amount hits needed and dodging that hand twice if i attack close up. What a game.

Nice! Forgot to add this to the list.
Known as Super Shinobi II in Japan, the game was shown in many magazines in 1992 before the game was finished, however it was then heavily reworked on. It finally released in 1993.

That rom is available and differences are highlighted here
