For me, it's when a year or so after the console's successor has come out when new releases stop, so the Xbox is now almost retro in my book. After Christmas I reckon quite a few stores (maybe EB excluded) will stop stocking games for it.

        Yeah?
They certainly don't make games like they used to, simply because all machines have a short life-cycle. So obvioulsy machines like the snes and md.. do have games that are different, simply because they are a product of their time.

Not... always better, but definitely different. That's what retro is all about. Enjoying the uniqueness of old machines, and playing games that have a different flavour to them.

When I play F-Zero, Mario World, Sonic1, Thunderforce etc... I appreciate the different atmosphere they generate. As much as I like a lot of modern games, it's always fun to take a trip back in time, and feel different vibes.

The brainwashing has got to you. Sadly.. in today's world, anthing like Outrun 2 is seen as quaint and old-fashioned by many gamers.

This is largely down to the many journalists who give arcade style games a rough time.

It's all small-minded misguided stupidity at the end of the day, and something that really makes me sad.

I could say the only thing retro about ' Outrun 2 ' is that it's ' fun '

Ah I should make clear, it was the memory of Outrun that felt retro, the music \ red ferrari combo etc, the game itself *is* modern times, but it has enough visual cues to put me back to aged 11 in Blackpool Coral Island!

(or back to about a fortnight ago, when I was last playing the mame on the big TV with logitech wheel and shifter )

The brainwashing obviously hasn't worked then... Hurray!

Yeah... I know what you mean. The music and sunny visuals bring back that late 80's arcade emotion.

In a world full of sterile racers, with little flair or passion, I find games like Ridge Racer 6, Outrun 2, give me a sort of retro rush, simply because they are such a rare breed these days.

Lets hope arcade style racers find favour again, and that people realise GT style games aren't the be all and end all of the genre.

One of my favourite Xbox games.

Perhaps 'retro' is just the wrong word? I am also an old BMX'er from the early 80's. In the 'retro' BMX forums the word is not really used. It's old school ('skool'?) for the 80's stuff, mid-school for most 90's gear and the modern stuff is 'new-school'. Mid-school doesn't become old school after a few more years.

Same thing should be with consoles IMHO. All stuff up to SNES/SATURN is old school, DC sort of sits on it's own as mid-school and the rest is new-school.

                  If that makes sense...?!

                    Old-Skool, Mid-Skool, New-Skool

                    Sounds like the education system.

I can see what you mean, and there wouldn't be any problem using the terms imo. I often refer to really old games as ' Old Skool '

                    Mid-Skool doesn't sound cool though!

I think I can settle this debate...

A genuine retro console doesn't have vibrating, analogue controllers!

I am one of those that craves realism, I've spent the last 5 years playing toca's, GT's, GTR's, with Logitech driving force pro. It was the lack of FF wheel that kept me away from the xbox, and whilst I enjoyed the occasional burnout, most of my arcade racer experience was quick mame blasts on Outrun or ChaseHQ, or the occasional top gear session on the snes.

The ?50 argos deal was too good to resist, and whilst part of me is saying "no, cannot play racing game with pad, for fun, must have wheel, seat in middle of room, full sim settings etc" another part of me is busy going "yay, woo, drift, ooh pretty scenery"

I guess "fun" is having a resurgance here.

Sega need to use the above in their advertising for the next Outrun!

lol.... I think the "best arcade racer" thread has shown how much love there is for Sega racers, we need either a collection or update on Scud Race, Daytona, Sega Rally etc, on the modern consoles.

A home port of Scud Race would be pretty damn nice, my only experience with the game is one time I actually found a stand-up arcade machine of it (and loved it).

Maybe a retro compilation of Sega's big 90's arcade games, is just too much trouble for them?

They should realise the desire for such a pack is strong with lots of gamers around the world.

Daytona was popular in every region. Nearly every racing fan loves the series.

If Sega were stingy and just gave us arcade perfect Daytona1 and 2, on one disc, I'd still be eager to buy it.

I know Sega are making a new Sega Rally at their new U.K studio dedicated to racing games. I think a new Daytona would be more warmly received, in a world where people are obsessed with Colin Mcrae.

Namco need to deliver a 90's arcade pack too!
