Portable Super Famicom - nearly done

Incase anyone's intersted, I've been working on this one for 3 hours, every other Saturday, for about 2-3 months now. It's finally nearing completetion! Today was a real Frankenstein moment, when I plugged in the batteries and pushed the on-switch.

    Front.

    Back.

    (game is Super Mario RPG)

Just a few things left to do:
    1 / Shoulder buttons.
    2 / Aluminium sides.
    3 / Charging jack.
4 / Slightly modify the buttons so they have better contact with the tact switches. They are onlyabout 80% at the moment.
5 / Sandwich it all together.
6 / Possibly do an LED mod to double battery life.
    7 / Find a suitable battery cover.
8 / Look into why the screen jumps a little in time with the audio.
9 / Add the remaining decals.

I was planning on ebaying it once done to fund christmas, but I'm not sure I could part with it now :-S Put too much into it.... And it probably wont be finished in time.

Anyone else tried anything like this? IThe instructions are all in this book:

Have not done one myself but I follow the benheck forum. I am planning a re-housed SFC - more a semi portable with built in screen but ability to input RGB from other consoles too. Big problem is finding a pre-made translucent case of the correct size - planning a few colourful leds inside too.

Nice idea to have screen input jacks - I think I'd use a tackle box like this one:

      ..might work.

Something like that would be pretty easy to cut out sections / parts of sections to position everything you need. You may be able to find exactly the box you're after.

Let me know how you get on :-D

Thats very cool zipper, it looks pretty professional. Will it support all games NTSC/PAL and with lockouts? Or just NTSC?

How much did the project cost you so far?

I suppose the screen is one of those PS1 portable LCD's?

I just bought that book, should be an interesting read.

Max P. do you have access to a vacuum forming machine? You could probably get good results by making your case from a block of wood, and then vacuum forming it, I used to do that kind of stuff at school for my electronics projects and the results were always pretty good..

zipper, I'm looking forward to seeing this once it's fully complete. Will you make a video of it running for You Tube?

Awsome, I love these custom portables people make. I'd love to see that running in real life (I don't live far away *hint* *hint* )

Hi Zipper, good job there, we have had a few exchanges on Ben's forum.

This is what I am after but slightly bigger - just cannot find one anywhere. I don't want a handheld with built in controller:

              http://www.hammondmfg.com/dwg2c.htm

I think what lets many handhelds down is a non-professional case, unless you are this guy:

              another:

Or this is my favourite (incredible):

That is great, such build quality, could have been a Nintendo release

They really are stunning examples Max P.
I'd love to produce something as stunning as that. I don't think I could handle re-locating the cartridge slot though. It would be a complete pain in the ass. That last case is perfect. Utterly stunning.

chaoticjelly : It's NTSC only at the moment - no plans for mods, mainly because I couldn't find any detail on snes jr/mini mods (and most of my games are ntsc).

All in, it cost me just over ?100 so far. The snes and the PS1 screen being the bulk of it. I imported a ntsc screen as I wasn't sure the pal screen would work (I used the composite output, but could have used a pal screen if I'd done the rgb mod I believe).

Incase it helps you, the one thing I really, really couldn't find in the UK was pad-per-hole proto board. I ended up getting it from here: http://www.smallbearelec.com/Detail.bok?no=73

I used 2mm 'plasticard' for the shell: http://search.ebay.co.uk/search/sear...tle=plasticard
It's really cool stuff, it cuts easily but is really tough.

I've seen the quality of your leads, you'd have no probs working thru one of these.

Yakumo - definatly gonna make a couple of vids, but not until it's done.
stainboy - Once it's done, PM when your planning to pass Rochford

Is the case made out of an already existing console? It reminds me of a PSone

That is so nice I want to cry. Haven't looked at his site for ages, didn't know he did podcasts, nice one.

If anyone is thinking of making a SNES portable this may be a good idea to use, very small once the board layout is removed:
