Thanks cj. It is time consuming, but great fun. Getting the bits together was the hardest bit for me. Hopefully, I can save you some time!

Don't use aluminium strips! Just cut plasticard strips to the width you need - seriously, you just score it with a knife and it snaps along the line, then you can bend and superglue it to the base. It's top stuff.

^I think that's the exact same stuff I used. 2mm plasticard.

    Get it here dude: http://www.smallbearelec.com/Detail.bok?no=73
Took 4 days from the US - fairly priced too.

Theres some PS1 screens on ebay for about ?25 quid
I know you're pretty handy with a soldering iron - if you've done an RGB mod on a snes jr before, then you can buy one of those PAL PS1 screens off ebay (The PS1 screen can take RGB). I imported a US NTSC screen so I could use the native composite from the mini.

If you use composite on a PAL screen, it'll come out black n white :-(

Here's some more shots of it :-D

Here's the guts + you can see the plasticard edging.

I've got to put a round lid over the batteries with a SFC game sized slot in it. Keeping my eyes open for the right size lid. The battery holders were made from 6 x AA holders from Maplin.

Charging the batteries - they're 2300mAh Nimh and seem to last for a couple of hours. I didn't do the LED mod on the screen... if i had they would have lasted a couple more.

If you decide to start, good luck! I'm happy to help out if needed. There's quite a bit of info over at benheck.com forums + he has the graphic packs for the decals on the site too. I modded them for the SFC colour scheme. I printed them out on weatherproof sticky printer paper that I found on ebay.

Not entirely rare I guess, but I have a PAL copy of Snatcher I got when it first came out, I was about.. 11 I think? Then, years later, I picked up the PC Engine version. Prized in that it's my favourite game

Did you dump the BIOS (I presume thats what the EPROM is?) Is there any difference in it to the released BIOS' ?

Where did you find something like that.. or is it a secret?
Sorry mate this is one that I will never sell.
And can't tell you where I get this from other than that somebody in the association with Sega Japan... ^__^

Those blurred out label is the SN - coz I can't show it. For BIOS no I have no means to dump it nor any plan...

I was told the M/B look similar to Sophia Dev board so I guess the BIOS would be one of early build...? For the difference I don't think there was but than it was a long time ago I fired this one up for cleaning/testing.

          cheers

I'm hogging the thread a little but this is the last photo (I promise) of the cartridge holder / battery housing. Now the cart is held in place properly so it doesn't reset if jogged + it looks 'finished' now.

This was the very last thing I had to do, and I can now officially call time on this project. Definately my most prized possesion.

Some really funny early posts in this thread

So 11 years later, what are your rarest and most prized items chaps? I expect highlights from Super Monkey Balls and importaku

                I'm torn between 3 items:

                1. Miyamoto signed Yoshi's Island
                2. Mushihimesama Matsuri 1.5 CAVE kit
                3. Akai Katana Limited Edition Home CAVE kit

I still remember randombs getting me that mint copy of Yossy Island when we were still at college Just in time for a London signing event at Virgin Megastore (remember Virgin Megastore anyone? ). I was happy to meet the man and shake his hand. He was my hero after all. I still have it after all these years.

Mushihimesama Matsuri - I missed out on release. They were quite limited even back then. Financial circumstances had me sell my entire collection around the time it came out. I wanted it ever since. I hunted it down and asked/chased several collectors. This was before most CAVE games skyrocketed in value. I chased 1 chap in particular about it every few months. His answer was 'no' each time of course. I later learned that he did the same thing as me to get his game. On April 1st a few years ago, he emails me out of the blue asking me if I was still interested at my last offer (it was pretty high). I thought it was a cruel April fools joke, but he was serious - joy! I got the funds together and paid the man. He told me that he wanted to hand deliver it because of the game's value. I waited 2 weeks for his visit anxiously. When he finally came over to our house, it was hard to contain my happiness I learned that he only sold it because he was trying to raise funds for a very expensive Ghostbusters Pinball machine - he told me that he didn't buy it in the end, because it wasn't that great. He regrets selling the kit now.

Akai Katana Limited has a similar story to the Matsuri kit above. Only difference was that this was a lot harder to find. Apparently it had 2 print runs - the first run being in single digits. There hasn't been 1 on yahoo auctions as far as I know, so I had just about given up hope. After doing some lengthy owner detective work (and begging) I convinced a chap in Germany to sell/trade his copy. 1 loan, several PCBs and 1 plane ticket later, I finally owned the kit. The deal almost fell apart several times. In fact, if Yakumo hadn't posted me a PCB from Japan which this chap really wanted, it could have all gone south (thanks Mark!). This was the most emotionally and physically draining one out of the 3.

I still don't know which one to choose!

Cool stories Zaki. What exactly does a kit contain of, is it everything to decorate a cab, as well as the board itself?

Hey NP. CAVE kits usually only include a bit of art and the PCB (Large POP, A4 DIP sheet, A4 art flyer, sticker move strip and PCB feet).

They don't have art conversion kits - they were meant for use in Japanese candy cabs mostly.

A few things have changed over the years, bought more stuff so some things are new & some still the same as ever.

As for gaming stuff amongst other things.....

My copy of Motoko chan's wonder kitchen complete with the winners documentation from Ajinomoto, the game is relatively easy to get hold of, but you will rarely ever see the winners documentation as it's stupidly rare. Seems nobody cared enough to keep it (the fools) also the myth of Japanese people looking after their games really well is total garbage as you will rarely ever see this game in mint condition, either the box will look like crap or it will be sunfaded to hell.

Pokemon mini collection had this since launch. Still mint & complete and safely sits protected in my cabinet in between play sessions, while most of the games in the set can still be found if you look hard enough there's at least 3 out of the 10 that are a total pain to find now. If you are looking for Togepi then start preparing your kidneys for sale.

My mixed Nintendo card colletions, comprising of many sets from the e-reader collection with many complete sets along with newer 3DS stuff like my totally complete kid ikarus uprising AR card collection. I have yet to find anyone else on the net that was mad enough to go for a coplete set including every promo card. Can also add the animal forest amiibo cards to this collection too as i recently completed those as well.

There is other misc stuff like my famicom mini complete sets or my 64DD stuff or even the FFCC white gamcube but those are not as high up on my list nowdays.

                          - Copy of Guilty Gear X I got signed when I met Daisuke Ishiwatari in London in 2011. When someone asked him what his favourite non Guilty Gear fighter was he said Third Strike and put it down to how closely you have to pay attention to your opponent. Respect for him soared after that comment.

                          - The Famitsu Game Boy Light that Ghost sold me for a mere £45 some years back. Thought it would be a rare that I'd never obtain but was jumping for joy at the opportunity to buy one.

                          - New acquisition but a CPS3 setup. Always loved the idea of one, but the battery situation was an issue for me. The Darksoft solution isn't exactly authentic but from the perspective of permanence I think it was the option to go with.

                          Think that's about it.

Back in the day when I was a serious collector I would have offered various examples of possessions that were prized; Delisoba Deluxe on the Saturn, Alien Soldier/Snow Bros/Vampire Killer/Eliminate Down on the Megadrive, Dracula X on the PCE, Judgement Silversword on the WonderSwan, Polystars on PCB, etc. But after selling it all I realised that actually my most prized possession are my glasses that I wear everyday. Without them I'd be screwed. I guess I'm also quite attached to my complete Akira Epic comics collection but I don't get to read them that often.

And I thought I was crazy back when I collected Cave boards. I mean this in the nicest possible way but when you take a loan out to get a video game that's when you know things are starting to get out of hand. Kudos to you though, I hope it brings you lots of happiness.
