Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver.
For several reasons. Firstly, it's playable on PS1/PS2, DC, probably other things too. It's also now playable on the PSP with the emulator if you have the PS1 version. This is a big thing for me - I really wanted to join in on the last couple (especially PoP) but couldn't find the game time. Anything on a handheld makes life easier (selfish reason, I know).
But the main reasons come from the game itself. Soul Reaver was a hell of a departure from the first game (Blood Omen, an overhead RPG type). A lush 3-D affair, it brought with it adventuring action with some excellent gameplay touches. Firstly, it does just about the best light/dark world thing I've ever seen. As cliche as that is now, SR did it in a very stylish game and one that really brought depth to the adventuring - watching the background morph as you switched was a highlight.
SR also had some excellent combat ideas brought from the fact that most of your enemies were vampires. It wasn't enough to beat the crap out of them. You had to throw them into sunlight, or water, or impale them somehow. It meant your surroundings were all-important in combat.
Much of these gameplay plusses were lost in the (in my opinion) very inferior sequels.
Some great characters too.
So vote for Soul Reaver!
