Edge nowadays isn't as good and you should stop buying Edge if it depresses you, man.
I try to filter the magazines bad points out of mind, and use it for info.

It does make me a bit depressed at times, and sometimes angry.

The problems with the magazine are severe. Videogaming is about fun. I feel little enthusiasm from the magazine. It's quite cold and detached; much like anything overly intellectual.

They seem fond of analysing gaming like a science. Where is the heart-felt emotions, the joy?

In many ways it just seems the magazine has gone down the wrong road, and needs saving. The use of wording is sometimes ridiculous, and the intellectual musings are beyond belief.

I think Edge need theraphy, or a happy pill.

Agree with the posts above re. Edge - much prefer Games Tm and retrogamer. Edge seems to have incredibly dull articles on stuff like "the making of some MMORPG/Army moves/ some other dull PC game". I think the magazine died about the same time as the N64

Now the new gen has arrived the retro lines have become a bit blurrier, but I don't own anything next gen yet, so does that make me retro. I don't know.

I always play as much older SRW as I do the PS2 ones anyway and even the PS2 games I do play have a distinctly retro flavour.

That mags have gone down the drain is a fact. Its not about pure gaming anymore, and most of it was already readable on the internet anyway. So they try it with a different approach, more lifestyle ish. It looks boring. Reads are also boring, because you already know most if it from the www. And because of the different approach to games. A mag like SSM and CVG (90's) was pure gaming and no bull**** surrounding it, mags like that don't exist anymore. EGM, Gamepro, Edge you name it and they all went down the drain.

But retro isn't all heaven. A lot of games and franchises were actually pretty crappy. And even moreso when you try em now. Think of all those wannabe's like Bubsy etc. What hurts retro imo, are the gazillion of cheapo compilations made available. They just don't feel and play like the real thing. And they make the real thing sound obsolete, but its fake. You won't get the same feeling if you play Sonic CD from a compilation than from a real CD unit hooked up to an MD. Same goes for all those Neogeo packs. Even graphically those games are lagging lightyears behind. I for one stopped buying and playing those packs, they all messed with my good memories of retro gaming. Virtua Racing Ps2 is a good example, being discussed in another topic.

What emulation and retro packs should do is inspire people to buy the real thing, and realise how much fun some old games can be.

In a market that is obsessed with the next big thing, the retro market is free from all that cutting-edge stress.

I personally enjoy the adventure of discovering retro gems, and searching for information. It's like being an explorer, delving into the past, and learning lots of things along the way.

As you say, there are tons of crap games from the past. This is one thing that stays the same within the industry.

The thing that's fun about retro, is finding amazing games, that put a smile on your face. Luckily.. there are thosands of these, and that's why going back can be such a pleasure.
