Beat Contra III over the weekend.

The section where you have to fight the beetle mini-boss really tested my patience, but after getting crushed against the ceiling for the tenth time, I decided to keep hold of the laser and managed to nuke him fairly quickly. Found the best tactic to beat the last 2 bosses (dragon and final boss) was to just spam the flamethrower. ;p

Also, I'd forgotten how badass the Contra music is; The steel factory theme is pure ear porn.

Enjoyed Aladdin, but the fun stopped for me when you had to out run the lava in the cave - felt like the game went up about 10 difficulty levels. ;p

I've put in quite a few hours over the last 3-4 nights on Snatcher on the Mega CD.

      It is bloody fantastic!

That it is. One of my favourite games of all time, wish we would get a PSN or Live release though.

Got into some Gunspike with the mrs last night. Great set of characters, Arthur is a beast, while Megaman is cheap as hell! Still, a really fun little shooter that isn't too long so is perfect for a quick thirty minute bash here and there.

Is it your first run through of the game?

Got myself a US PSN Card and downloaded Alundra from the PS One Classics. Pretty cool game. Feels a bit like Zelda, but with a more linear narrative and overall bigger story emphasis. The combat and movement are really fluid and responsive. Also liking the visual style of the game. It looks fictional and fantasy like Zelda, but a bit more sober and "realistic".

What I generally don't like about these types of games (action adventure/RPG) is that you have almost no control of your equipment/strength/gear, as all items and health upgrades are awarded through the story progression. Would have liked the opportunity to gain health based on XP/enemies killed, and maybe the option to upgrade already owned weapons by paying a blacksmith or something. Still pretty cool game though.

I think I played Alundra or maybe it was Alundra 2 as an attempt to find something in the RPG line which I could actually get into. I'd tried so many others I ended up hating. Thirty minutes in I gave up on this too, I thought it dreadful from both the story, dialogue and gameplay perspective.

Just started PS2 Onimusha 2 - very attractive looking and the gameplay easy to get into just like the original. But yet again it's a demonstration of Capcom's now almost legendary inability to employ people who can write decent English (Americanised or not) dialogue. Why can they never get it right, let alone make it sound natural? They even invent English words.

A total erase of Super Mario Kart on the SNES so I can start it from scratch. God it's a quick game to complete, but great though...

I really have a soft spot for the old top down walk along shooters. From Commando, MERCs, Rambo 3 (one of my favourite MD games), Kiki Kaikai (PCE), that neo geo series I forget the name of, Pocky and Rocky 2 (SNES) and Guwange (arcade).

I noticed Twinkle Tale in my cupboard the other day and remarkably, after owning it for at least a couple of years, I've never tried it.

So, I got the ol' MD out and gave it a whirl.

                        It's f*cking ace!

Really? Special Cup on 100cc? Must admit it takes me quite a few goes to unlock 150cc... Rainbow Road is a f*cking killer!

I've been playing Sapphire on the Duo-R. I'm still having sound issues with CD audio playback but game data seems fine.
First impressions aren't great to be honest. Thing is this is a pretty ordinary shooter within a tech demo. It almost seems to be trying to hard. Sprites are typically oversized for the screen area and even your own vehicle is too large making you feel like it is a bit cumbersome. This is common on other PCE games though and I probably shouldn't have expected anything different.
Controls seem ok and I'm sure the game will get better but it is all a bit meh at the moment.
I'm interested in seeing some of the fancy effects the game deploys as it is always interesting to see how far a system is pushed in it's later years. Of course effectively having 17.5Mbit of ROM per level with the Arcade card should allow for plenty of pre rendered stuff i would think.

Recently picked up an appealing (and rare UKV) GB title called Castle Quest. it's an interesting game - sort of a cross between chess and cardfighter type games.

I was rather pleasantly surprised at actually how good and addictive it is. I've spent a good few hours on it over the weekend.

I love collecting and it's always a bonus when i discover a new (to me) gem like this.
