Yep, I played this when it originally came out and thought it was a decent little game, never finished it tho.

          Battlantis

Guys, I haven't posted on here in years, so I hope you won't mind me joining the fray - but this thread seemed to be an ideal place to mention my current obsession.

Which is Battlantis, played via Mame on my recently purchased cab.

If you don't know it, it's basically Space Invaders with a vaguely Fantasy/Atlantis theme. Instead of a ship, you're a little cloaked fella with a sort of crossbow, and instead of Invaders from Space you get little minotaur chaps and flying bat thingies. The standard rate of fire is very slow, so this is one of those games where you have to time your shots and be a bit patient. Personally I think this makes it quite a rewarding game. There are power ups (grenade thingies, fast shot, big shot, freeze enemies etc), but they only last a few seconds, so choosing when to nab them adds another bit of tactical depth. For example, leaving one enemy on screen so that you can hang about for the power up guy to appear just before a boss, that sort of thing.

The game was released to arcades by Konami in 1987 and was apparently written by the same bloke who did Contra/Gryzor. It won't be to everyone's taste but if you like tough games that nevertheless reward patience with slow and steady progress, you might just find something to like.

Oh, and the music is amazing. Video here:

Unfortunately the guy playing it gets rather stuck on level 2, but you get the gist.

I put on Resident Evil 2 on the Dreamcast the other day with the intention of playing it right through, after remembering how much I enjoyed it on the PS1 when it was released.

Mistake. It's utter gash now and for me unplayable. The controls are terribile and I just couldn't be bothered sticking it out.

Another rose tinted memory trod upon.

                Re: RE2

The controls and the fixed camera/pre-rendered backgrounds are the very things that have always made it a challenge. Nowadays if the controls aren't simple and fluid people complain. Same thing with Tomb Raider - people always bleat about the old grid based movement system and controls but the games were built around them and still play more than well enough even by today's molly-coddled standards.

Took my N64 out and played Perfect Dark.

I really enjoyed the game when it came out. It has been a while since I last played it properly but I was completely shocked when I found that I couldn't go back to the controls of Goldeneye and Perfect Dark at all!

Has anybody else had such a problem?

I have clocked up the hours in Team Fortress 2 on the PC and obviously have used keyboard/mouse controls for PC FPSs and dual sticks since the PS2 (I think the first shooter to use dual analog sticks was Timesplitters. Either that or it was around that time). I certainly wasn't expecting to be given such a hard time on Perfect Dark when the controls were like that.

Only retro for me is the PCE, on which I've been playing Shubibinman and that overly camp dodgy platformer Ikobo sold me. It's bonkers and totally crap, yet somehow fantastically awesome at the same time!

I was playing Magician Lord yesterday. Sooooo much better than some negative people make it out to be. It has excellent visuals, great sound, and that old-skool action that is pure joy to play. A brilliant game.

Classic game this, in the early nineties it was one of the first Neo titles I bought, played it to death!
