    Game boy top ten?

Seem to have reached something of a stalemate with the gba top ten, but whatever! Since this year is the original Game boy's 20th anniversary, let's make a top ten monochrome classics list.

    1. Link's Awakening
    2. Pokemon Red/Blue
    3. Final Fantasy Adventure
    4. Mario Land 2
    5. Tetris
    6. Gargoyle's Quest
    7. Mole Mania
    8. Kirby's Dreamland
    9. Wario Land
    10. Rockman World 2

My suggestions are Link's Awakening for the number one spot, followed by Seiken Densetsu, Pokemon Blue/Red, Mario Land 2, bit of Revenge of the 'Gator, anyone?

This ones going to struggle even more as theres just too many great games to get down to 10

All those you suggested are worthy suggestions, for me my most favourite game that i like is a ganbare goemon game, it's the very first one they released on gameboy its like a shrunken down version of the original on super famicom.

Sadly not many even know of it let alone have played it so i doubt it would get onto the top 10

Oh man, Gargoyle's Quest, I'm dying to play that. It's quite a shame how I insist on the Jap versions, everthing would be a lot easier to get if I didn't!

I was gonna get into Goemon, but there's just too many sodding games! I was looking for the gameboy one that got released here, but I couldn't tell it apart from all the others. You know how many Goemon games there are Jason? I know there's at least 3 or 4 just on the gameboy. I think the other problem is the quality and even style varies greatly between the games.

The very first Wario Land game is worth a mention, plus Mario's Picross, Donkey Kong '94 and a personal favourite, Mole Mania

I love Mole Mania and Picross (although I still reckon the DS one is best, even though no one agrees. What's their problem?)

Theres 5 goemon games that span the mono & gbc, only one of them is gbc only.

Heres the lowdown on the 4 i have (you'll see why i dont have 5 in a bit lol) Starting at the top then left to right.

                  Ganbare Goemon: Sawareta Ebisumaru
This was the very first goemon on mono gameboy, it plays very similar to the super famicom original & even has minigames & shops like the super famicom version, strangely enough this made it to the west in the Konami GB collection Vol 3 for the gameboy colour, fully translated & the graphics colourized. Graphically simple but a lot of fun to play, still one of my most fave gameboy games ever.

                  Ganbare Goemon: Tengu-to no Gyuakushu!
Released on gbc, this one is a traditional rpg where you play as a boy who is a fan of goemon the tv show, he eventually gets transported to goemons world where he meets up with each of the characters & they are added to his party. The game uses the same perspective as pokemon & you have random battles like a traditional rpg, you gan use both magic & weapons while you fight & you gain exp points (did i mention its a traditional rpg LOL) another fun & long lasting goemon game but harder due to the language barrier but not super hard.

Ganbare Goemon: Mononoke Douchuu Tobidase Nabebugyou
Another gbc rpg but this one plays a bit like pokemon, but no random battles this time you can see the monsters on your map & you can avoid them if you want. In this game the monsters you come across you can recruit into your party, its quite a big game & theres a lot to do in it & theres minigames in this one too, its also related to goemon mononoke sugoroku on N64 & you can swap passwords between the games to get different monsters in them.

                  Ganbare Goemon: Hoshizorashi Dynamites Arawaru!!
This returns back to been an action game & was the last goemon game to be released on gbc, it's very impressive but its also a gbc only game. It plays very much like goemon 2 on the super famicom, now its not only in full colour but you even have impact robot battles & in first person mode too just like the sfc ver. Has minigames great stages & boss battles, well worth picking up.

Now remember i said there was 5 goemon games, theres a reason i only have 4, although im a massive goemon fan i cant bring myself to own the **** ones. The following game is a complete turd, under no circumstances buy this even if you see it for next to nothing,

Ganbare Goemon: Kurofune tou no nazo

It's nothing like a goemon game it has poor collision detection, crap graphics, cheating bosses. Each level you have to complete in one go & they are long & very boring to do, you then get to a boss who you have to beat by playing a minigame, the minigames are totally rock hard & the computer cheats like hell. If you lose the minigame you have to restart the level from scratch, whichever division of konami they used for this gme should be ashamed of themselves. Funnily enough this one made it to the west as legend of the mystical ninja, lol total insult that one of the ****test games they think deserves to get released outsode of japan & then they wonder why goemon isnt more popular in the west.

Only redeeming feature is the japanese box art is nice but thats about it

& thats pretty much it for goemon games on the gameboy, theres 2 on gba & one on ds & thats all of them for handhelds.

Lol, that's the only handheld Goemon I have. The one with the ****ty 3d render on the cover. Probably why I didn't go to great lengths to get the others, and now I'm out of Japan I doubt I could afford it, since over there they're only a couple of hundred yen. I dread to think what they would cost to get from here. Thanks for the info J!

God talk about unlucky no wonder you were put off. Most of the goemon gameboy games tend to pop up on ebay from time to time. Sometimes quite cheap too.

Gameboy has some of my favourite platformers. None of these have been mentioned yet:
                        Bionic Commando
                        Shadow Warriors
                        Kid Dracula
                        Castlevania 2 Belmont's Revenge
                        Operation C
                        Batman
Gameboy mono is my favourite platform to collect for. I rarely pay more than a pound per cart as they are ignored by the masses, yet have playability in spades.

No way is Mario Land 2 better than 1

Mega Man 2 and Super RC Pro Am should be in there. NES ports they might be, but they are classics.

                          All IMO, of course.

A little OT (but there's not many GB threads around)...It's funny how so many gameboy games have names or initials written on them with permanent marker. I actually quite like picking up a cart with markings like this on them. It shows the game has seen a bit of action - enjoyed, played and has a history.
Obviously, it's also nice to get a game that's pristine and doesn't need the edge-connector attacking with a cotton-bud + nail varnish remover before it'll even work.
GB games aren't going to loose much/any value when they're marked as they're not worth much money in the first place.

Back OT - Please put Castlevania 2 on the list! Personally, I'd put it near the top as the best platformer on the system. I'd take Warioland off and put Shadow Warrior in. Shadow Warrior (Ninja Gaiden in the US) is my favourite run 'n' gun (slash) game on the system. It's a really tight and enjoyable game.

I'm assuming that Gameboy Color (GBC) games can be included in this as well, no?

That being the case, I'm going to give praise to Metal Gear: Ghost Babel (released in the West as Metal Gear Solid). Arguably the best GBC game made, DEFINITELY the best storyline and plot of any GBC game and stays brilliantly faithful to the Metal Gear Solid trademark (classic stealth gameplay, excellent boss characters) while giving an updated feel to the classic Metal Gear games. And that's not even mentioning the amount of content within the game (180 VR Missions, unlockables, in-game secret sub-missions, etc.). An absolute must for any die-hard MGS fan, an a title that every Gameboy/Gameboy Color owner should play at least once.

Other Original Gameboy titles like Mario's Picross and Donkey Kong '94 have already been mentioned, and they get my vote.
