Why can't i get in to the saturn?

This week i decided to have yet another go at giving the saturn some love. I've bought a white jap system, and two of the three games that most appeal to me, radiant silvergun and castlevania. (the third is guardian heroes, which i do love but not enough to get me hooked on the system). Silvergun, yes, it IS impressive, but it's NOT exciting. I enjoy watching it more than playing it? Castlevania, i really should like this as a PC-Engine version fanatic (and obviously it rips a lot out of PCE dracula-x) but it just doesn't have that same magic as the engine version? In fact, in every department the older gen PCE version pisses all over the saturn one for me personally. I just don't know what it is, but the saturn just doesn't do it for me. Look out for these items in a for sale thread near you soon....................

Everything you say in your post I hold as correct, and I am a Saturn fan.

The Dracula game was built for Playstation and everything flows much better on that system, yes the Saturn version has some worthy goodies but imo is not in league with the PC Engine game, call it preference if you will.....it's not a fare representation of the Saturn.

Silvergun is rated too higly, again preference, it brings some things to the table and its a decent showcase, but there are many more entertaining vertcal shooters on the system, take Battle Garegga for one. An outstanding game and an excellent conversion on Saturn, though for its glory in essence its emulated in MAME perfect, granted minus some system excelusive stuff but none worth the money.

You may groan at the freebie choice, but it is a relative option. Saturn revels in its exclusive games still, Sega Rally (PS2 version hmmm?), Panzer Dragoon series it's a highlight in gaming, there are others too, with Saturn I feel you have to make the right choices, but it's worth the effort.

You've got the wrong games! I've always said that RSG was overrated as far as a game goes. Yes, it's very pretty to watch but I find it ever so dull. If you want an exciting shooter then get DoDonpachi, Battle Garegga, Layer Section (quite cheap) Batsugun, Darius Gaiden, Sokyugurentai and so on.

Castlevania on the Saturn is OK but as Baseley09 said, it's a port of a PlayStation game NOT a Saturn game. There are many better platform action games that are made for the Saturn.

The Saturn is a fantastic system that you will enjoy once you get the right games for you.

My advice would be to try out some of the less expensive stuff first, as they will provide every bit of enjoyment as the more costly titles and you'll be able to try more of them.

One of, if not my favourite, shooters for the Saturn is actually Layer Section. Its pretty cheap to get hold of so before you throw in the towel I'd recommend you give that one a go, there is something about it which I just love as soon as that music kicks in

Also things like Darius Gaiden, Dynamite Deka, Panzer Dragoon 1 & 2, Sega Rally, Daytona, Real Bout Fatal Fury Special, Shin Shinobi Den and Vampire Hunter are all pretty cheap and will give you a good taste of what the Saturn has to offer.

I should maybe say that i have tried to go down the jap saturn route before. The results were pretty much the same, i just thought maybe i'd find it more interesting now. I've played/owned pretty much everything mentioned so far. Dynamite deka is probably the one i have the fondest memories of, i'd forgotten about that one. I absolutely can't stand garegga, which caused many arguments with certain people before!

What's the point of this thread, then?

You expected to like a system you disliked before, even though it has aged even more over the years. You've played everything mentioned here and pretty much dislike most of that. You should've known the answer to your own question already, this console is not your cup of tea.

              Rhetoric question threads FTL.

Why can't you get into the Saturn? Dunno, maybe the huge range of quality titles is a turn off? Try a Jag CD or Amstrad GX4000 instead.

I'm not saying the games are terrible, or i hate them, i'm not mental. I just don't get the same buzz out of playing them as much as other sytems. Calm down and don't go all fanboyish on me.

So what are your 'buzzing' systems out of curiosity ?

My favourite systems are the PC-Engine, neo geo, dreamcast, 360 and....................er.....................3do! I'm not bashing the saturn here, i just don't get why i don't take to it, as on paper it's the logical system for me. Maybe it's just that gen, as i'm pretty nonplussed by the playstation one as well.

As for trying something again, when i was a kid i hated macaroni cheese. Now as an adult i love it. Opinions do change over time.

Why can't you get into the Saturn? Maybe you are too tall? Seriously though try playing some made for Saturn games. I'll buy RSG from you.

CMcK, i'm doing my best to like it which is why i've bought it!

Ok then, to get me past my non saturn lovingness lets get me some game recommendations. I'm not really in to 3D stuff, so try to keep it 2D offerings unless you feel it's an absolute must have. I've just ordered guardian heroes which is probably an all time fave, so what else to go for?

Just looked at a vid for shin shinobi den, looks great, more like that please!
