I watched them the other day. As expected, complete and total bollocks. The sad thing is that the retards of this world will take that guide as gospel truth. Also, did you see the crap they wrote about the most recognized games for the Neo Geo?? Where was The King of Fighters or Fatal Fury or even Samurai Showdown on that list? Complete crap.

fanboyism aside, i cant believe they put the ps2 and atari 2600 above the snes and megadrive. giving the top spot to the nes was understandable but i wouldnt say its the greatest console ever made

The Atari 7800 is better than the Saturn? Shows how much bollocks that list is!

soon as I saw this list I knew it would be controversial.

I have to admit I do agree with the top 4 consoles they chose,
I'm not particularily a fan at all of the Nes, Atari 2600 or PS2 but I do agree they should be in the top 4.

The order's rubbish, especially the saturn placement and there are big notable absences of pretty much every British system: Amiga 500, C64, Spectrum, BBC Micro.

But weren't they home computers and therefore not consoles?

And if I'm being pedantic weren't the Commodore machines American (might be wrong there)?

Haven't checked out the IGN list but if it's done by Americans I suppose the NES was the most popular console ever. I think it was owned by a huge number of Americans.

American's love the NES. It's a nostalgia thing.

I feel the MS doesn't really get enough credit sometimes. Wonder Boy is considered a pretty obscure series but I feel that Wonder boy 3 is a far superior game to the original metroid.

The overal standard of MS games was better too (although it had fewer timeless classics). But the console wasn't big in America so it gets little recognition.

I do agree with them that the Famicom/Nes should be number 1 as it is such a truly monumental machine.
I have no personal nostalgia attachments with it at all, the only game I can recall playing and have fond memories of is SMB3.

IGN were obviously looking at things from the perspective of which consoles made the biggest impact on gaming.

I'd say the NES/Famicom did deliver the biggest revolution. Then again.. a lot of gamers would say the Atari2600 is the daddy.

I think the NES is quite rightly the #1 machine, because of MarioBros, Zelda, Metroid, and many other franchises that ushered in a new era of top quality home entertainment.

I can't agree with the PS2 being at #3. Yes.. it's a good machine which was immensely popular and had a ton of games, but.. it wasn't anything staggeringly fresh.
I think the Xbox delivered more to gaming than the PS2. The Xbox should be at #3.

The SNES is at #4, with the MD at #5. I see that as a draw really. Both machines enchanted gamers of all ages with a long list of brilliant, classic games. It wouldn't be fair to say one is significantly better, or more worthy than another. Both are equal; even if I personally love the SNES more.

No way should the N64 be behind the Dreamcast. The N64 delivered a new level of 3D brilliance, that showed developers how to make open world 3D experiences. Mario64 was a revolution back in 1996.
The Dreamcast is very good, but.. it wasn't a revolution. It delivered much nicer 3D - and online gaming, but.. SEGA didn't get things right in the marketing and third-party support. Also, there weren't enough AAA games - and Sega killed the machine before it got a chance to be pushed to its limits.

It's crazy to put the 360 ahead of the PS1. The PS1 delivered in every area: aesthetic design, game range, and social acceptance of gaming. It was a great machine for its time - and sold many many millions.
The 360 is basically an Xbox with shinier visuals, I don't see anything amazingly brilliant about it.

I liked seeing the Wii at #11. It's not the big revolution people make it out to be. It's just a GameCube with a remote control instead of a proper joypad. Nothing to shout about; even though some of its games are great.

                          My Top5 consoles:

                          1. SNES
                          2. MegaDrive
                          3. Xbox
                          4. NES
                          5. Neo Geo

SNES because it has a selection of classics that can't be matched. The MegaDrive because of Sonic and its vast range of excellent experiences. Xbox because it delivered excellent technical abilities and Live online gaming that worked a treat. NES because it showed how fun Japanese home gaming could be. The NeoGeo because it stunned me with it's breathtaking 2D power for many many years.

That's the genius of it! Who'd have thought during the lean years of the GameCube that Nintendo would bounce back so successfully... by reviving the GameCube in a cunning disguise? You've got to admire Nintendo, really.

As for the Saturn's low placing on the list that others have mentioned, although in retrospect the Saturn's a great machine for hardcore gamers to collect, at the time, I remember my friends who bought the Saturn were gutted by how it turned out. I've always thought that the Dreamcast's flop was due to the poor brand image Sega had after the Saturn.
