    [June/July] Sonic 2D

This time we'll be playing Sonic (2D versions).

    These are available EVERYWHERE.
    MD/MS.
    GBA
    XBLA/PSN
    Sonic Mega Collection: PC/Xbox/GC/PS2
    DS
    gamegear
    PSP
    Mobile
    Saturn

Personally, I never really got on with Sonic1 so never played any of the others. I'm going to try and put a bit more time into Sonic1 again now that I'm (much) older and wiser. I'd rather play Turrican though.

Skip Sonic 1 and play Sonic 2. Faster paced, better and more imaginative level design and you can finish it in an evening no problem.

Never really liked any of the Mega Drive versions. Only got 1 and II because they were pushing the Mega Drive so hard in graphics terms . Sonic 1 did look and sound just beautiful, and loved the way the music seem to match and be in perfect harmony with what was happing on screen .

Sonic CD is what I would class as the best Sonic 2D game.

Spot on there TA, I do still manage to get all panic struck when in all the water levels and that bloody music comes on

I have been playing http://info.sonicretro.org/Sonic_1_Megamix XBOX version quite recently and whilst a bit madcore it is quite enjoyable and worth a spin

The Master System is where it is at.

Over the last 2 weeks, myself and a friend at work have been hammering Sonic on the MS/MD and MCD via the PSP and loving it. All of the games are good to brilliant, Sonic 3 being the weak link on the MD.
We have found the Master System games to be the best overall due to 1 aspect, the Chaos Emeralds.

In Sonic on the MD you have to do the stupid bonus levels as many will know, in Sonic 2 these are a bloody pain in the arse to complete. For me it makes the huge levels almost void unless you search for lives.
On the MS there is 1 Chaos Emerald in each zone and it is the better game for it. Ok the visuals aren't as good but trying to find the hidden emeralds is so much more interesting. The MS music is also better IMO, the tunes are just superb.

Hmm. Isn't that the only one that's not on EVERYTHING?

Another here that prefers the Master System games, while on the subject of the music, Toot Toot Warrior from Sonic CD, is Green Hills Zone on the Master System version of 2.

Wow...Talking sense and good English grammar!? Who are you and what have you done with the REAL Team Andromeda?

But seriously, Sonic 1, 2 & CD are shoe-ins when you talk about some of the greatest 2D platformers of all time, no doubt. That said, I would personally give 2 the edge over CD for the refined game mechanics and the superior (imho) Sound and Animation. How brilliant would Sonic CD have been if it had been made with the Sonic 2 engine instead of the Sonic 1 engine?

Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles are, to my mind, Sonic games that feel (in terms of gameplay) like they came about after Sonic Team were forced to watch comparative titles of the day like Donkey Kong Country 2/3 and Super Mario World in action. You can keep them.

I always enjoyed Sonic 2 over the others. Tight level design, great music and it just felt better than the first.

Sonic 3 just feels bloated to me, and didn't feel like a Sonic game due to trying to pack too much in. It wasn't as pure as the first 2 titles, although I know I'm in the minority with that opinion.

As far as Master System versions went I only played the first one, but for my money it was a superior game to it's big Megadrive brother. It's been a while since I played it though, so I may give it another try soon.

Any word for the Game Gear Sonic 1 & 2? I always felt that they played decently. Much better than the Master System versions, imho.

                          Were they not identical then?

I had the gamegear one as well and I remember it being the same as the master system one.

I'm pretty sure that they were. I just felt that the Game Gear version played in a more tight and compact way which suited Sonic. Probably just the nature of the Game Gear format, I guess.
