    A bit swifter IIRC?

Its seemed to look a tad more colourful too . I always though the Neo Geo Pocket version was better than the Game Gear one.

The game gear games have a bit of slowdown i think, also they're a bit zoomed in which can make some parts harder. Been playing 1 + 2 and tripple trouble recently on the Gamegear. 1 is easily my favorite but maybe thats because I played 2 to death as a kid. Much prefer the SMS/GG games to the Megadrive ones.

Tripple trouble is one i've never really played untill recently and I found it a bit disapointing, Very slow and floaty

Sonic chaos for the SMS on the other hand is another I've never played till I picked it up at a boot sale a while ago and it suprised me at how good it is, like tripple trouble it seems to try to emulate the MD games more but it has its own charm. I like that the SMS/GG games seem more platformed focused then speed
        focused.

EDIT: was the GG region free and 60hz? maybe thats why the sonic games seemed faster on it.

My favourite is Sonic 3 & knuckles.

Sonic 3 on its own isn't really that great but combined with S&K like it was originally intended creates one of my top 5 games of all time

I just found the music, the level design, the replayability all way better in sonic 3 & knuckles and the save features useful.
I also liked the little cutscenes explaining how he gets from stage to stage and knuckles little plans. Wish they still did that.

Wow... I've never seen so many people who prefer the 8-bit Sonics. Odd I like the original 8-bit game a lot, but the MD trilogy (or quadrilogy, depending on how you look at it!) is so good. I like CD too, but always thought it felt a bit unfinished.

I used to hate Game Gear Sonic 2 so much. Those boss levels (where you have no rings) become near impossible due to the lack of space to move around in. Then I sold it, and got the sms game - much better! It's a shame Triple Trouble was never ported to the sms.

Yes, it was. The GG had more colours too iirc.

I wish Sonic 3 & Knuckles hadn't been split into two games back in the day (both at full price on the MD) as I feel the complete version of the game is excellent. I love both halves (Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles) though I understand the feeling that Sonic 2 is more pure.

Trying to decide which I prefer overall is way too difficult though.

I remember the first couple of MS games, but I offloaded my MS when I got my MD in about 1993, and I find it hard to go back to the more basic nature of them.

As for Sonic CD, I didn't get to play that until the release of Sonic Gems Collection on the GC, and I just don't understand it. All help on that one appreciated.

You don't need to bother with any of that time travel gimmickry at all. Just collect rings / finish bonus stages and get all the emer... um, "time stones", to finish the game properly w. good ending.

Recently downloaded the iphone Sonic 1 game and, slowdown aside, have been enjoying it very much once again. Still prefer 2 if I had to choose, but the Green Hill Zone for me is so iconic of what 2D Sonic is all about.

Have to say I found the first GBA Sonic great fun, and thought Sonic Rush was pretty decent too actually...

Was expecting more chat about this.
Anyone playing any of them right now?

                      Still playing them yeah.

Got all of the emeralds on Sonic 2 on the MD and what a chore it is. Tails is a pain in the arse but I have since found out it is much better with Sonic alone.

Completed both MS game and going through again to get all of the Emeralds. So much better games IMO. The only bad thing is some slowdown.

I just finished Sonic 1 on XBLA. The ending is pap when you get all the emeralds but it's so much easier when you can quick save and reload whenever it goes tits up.

I still hate the water levels and Scrap Yard Brain (?) is still the best!

I also have fond memories of MS Sonic but recently VC'd it only to realise the framerate is dreadful (and this is 60Hz, gawd knows how bad it was on Pal) and its ridiculously easy, I think I finished it in under an hour with about two lives on my first go in over 15 years.

Sonic 2 MD is the daddy. CD is excellent but I wasn't keen on the "true completion" past/future requirements.
