I share the sentiment expressed by some of you in that I simply don't have the time to play through long games. In fact, so precious is my time at the moment that I haven't even been able to post in this thread, as much as I've wanted too. I also find hobbies like reading and poker a lot more difficult to find time for these days.

Anyroad, so as an indicator as to how long 'long' games take me, I've spent the best part of a year trying to finish Chrono Trigger, and that's not even that long a game. Spent the odd evening here or there playing it, got up to
and couldn't really be arsed to go back and grind enough to beat the bastard. I couldn't even be bothered to play through all the sub-quests towards the end of the game as I felt I had spent an eternity playing it and was eager to play through something new.

Right now I'm playing through Shining Force CD S-L-O-W-L-Y. Yeah, I like the shorter games these days like Snatcher with around, say, ten hours' of gameplay. Gives me a fighting chance of finishing them before I get sick of the sight of them.

I would also like to mention that handhelds get more use from me than 'real' plug-in-the-telly consoles. My Wiz is easily my most used console these days and right now I'm giving Earthbound a whirl and, with it's rapid progression and lack of a necessity to grind, it fits perfectly into my 'not too long' prerequisite.

However, it was a lot easier way back in the day - had one console (SFC) and used to rent games from Megaware so played one game flat out for a week and the next week a new one. Then over the last 15 years gradually got a N64/MD/PCE/PS/Saturn/DC/MVS... blah, blah, blah. If I was ever brave enough I'd out the lot and keep the SFC and a core of 15 games or so. But I'd regret it for the rest of my life.
Go on, do it. A couple of years ago I reduced my collection from thousands of games across platforms such as the Saturn, PCE and Neo AES to just a Megadrive/Mega CD, a SNES and a handful (and by that, I mean fewer than ten per platform) of games, and I've never looked back. Ikobo can back me up here; less is certainly more as you can devote yourself to just one or two games at a time.

I haven't read through the whole of this, but yeah many 'modern' games that are long or require to much input from me get the boot, case in point I had enough of Halo:Reach after 10 minutes. That said I went to my trusty Wii and broke out the Prime trilogy and that is, arguably, a long game.

I'm not sure it's the length, rather the pacing that most games suck at. I want a videogame to be a videogame, not some life-like projection of life on another planet. I think I've played my 360 about 3 times after re-getting a wii, the simple pleasures of Muscle March and Ghost Squad continually draw me in. That said something like Okami, with it's unique aesthetic and wonderful storyline will always appeal to me rather than the latest Modern Warfare or alien shooter, it seems that the length of a game has a lot to do with its 'heart' for me.

You could argue SMG2 is a 'long' game, but it's digestable bite-size chunks make it a wonderful experience that I love playing. I think many modern games forget how to be 'games' and focus to much on a forced experience, rather than just let the gameworld unfold.
