Oh I just thought about something.
All this talk about spending so much time editing and all is one thing, but I made a couple of gifs a while ago that show just the extent of damage I sometimes need to deal with.

I think these might be interesting.
Just make sure to let the whole thing load as it's rather big.
Oh and don't mind any artifacts in the pictures as they occur when creating gifs from jpgs at this resolution. Those aren't in any of the actual scans.

    MAXIMUM 7: damaged page
CVG 171: very badly worn out cover
CVG 171: page with severe ink damage in printing mishap

Be sure to zoom in to the full size of the pages to see the full before/after effect all over the page.

Those specific examples run from 2-4 hours per page.
        I know, I know.

Luckily most of my magazines are in great condition so it takes about 10-20 min to edit them apiece.
The covers always require a bit more work though since they can take quite a beating. So I'd say around 1-2 hours for a cover.

It also makes a huge difference what the magazine layout looks like.
Something like Mean Machines is a bit easier to work on than say Super Play.
Depends on the quality of the paper, layout, damage, etc.
        Lots of different factors.
It's also a bit tricky to find the right balance so that they don't look over-edited and keep a natural feel, even though that's hard to do on a computer screen.
The editing techniques can vary drastically from publication to publication.

CDisplayEX is my prefered application, and there's also Comical.

.cbz files are actually nothing more than .zip files, so you can freely rename them to .zip if you would prefer not to use a dedicated program.

I'm using Comicbooklover myself and love it, but that application isn't free. It costs $25.
The iPad and iPhone/iPod Touch versions are free on iTunes though.

As far as I know CDisplay is only available for Windows, and even then I used to prefer ComicRack as it had better options as well as performance.

I think the best free alternative on OSX is FFview

For the best quality set the application to show one page at a time and have the page width fit to the screen so you don't need to scroll sideways.
              Then go fullscreen with cmd+F.
If the application seems a but sluggish when going from one page to the next it might be a good idea to up the buffer size and maybe fetch distance as well in preferences.
