I love the test PS2's. I'm a big fan of the original PS2 shape & size. I hated my slims eventually.

I dislike slim machines myself too.

Quite few of EU developed ps1 games in pal are full screen full speed. Playing them on a NTSC PS2 causes you to lose the screen and speeds them up too much.

Yeah I tried Crash Bandicoot in my NTSC machine and everything was too quick. Kinda amusing.

Where'd you get those things? Would like one.

eBay. I only wish I had more from the amount of people asking me to sell them one. These ones are already claimed.

There not 100% region free, but very few games used the full region lock set up, back when we used to have them in the office all the games I ever tried worked. One of the coders I worked with mentioned that it depended on how the region lock was set up I can't remember if Gran Turismo 4 was one such game or not.

Were did you get hold of them? I'd quite like to get hold of one myself, just remember under "NDA" developers are supposed to return them to Sony, but doubt Sony will care about PS2 stuff now. DTL-H50002 is a **** model due to the RAM changes in it, so you don't want that one.

As I said, eBay. The seller was a wholesaler so I assume the business just wanted rid of them. My old debug (DTL-H30001 E) was from Assemblergames.

Do you have any greater detail on the DTL-H50002? I have one here and it's silent and boots the fastest. I'm aware it tends to have lens coil issues when chipped and also somewhat when not chipped but I'm not hugely clued up.

I'm keeping the DTL-H30101 E for myself, NTSC-U/C as it is.

Also huh, I thought they were region free. As you say I've never comes across a game that hasn't booted.

Yeah it is a very rare thing to happen and it's something like 99.9% of all PS2 games will work with a test kit if it's not the same region.

Sony had a nasty habit of changing the PS2 internals around as such some early PS2 games would not work on later models due to some of the hardware changes. The 5000 series was one of the worse models for this with both retail and test units for getting some of the older PS2 games to work on it.

While it's not that bad a issue there are a few of the old PS2 games that won't load on it, Sony Japan used to have a official list on their website, that told you which game didn't work on which consoles not sure if it is still on their site any more.

Huh, that's pretty interesting to know. Perhaps not the most immediate problem for the most part but certainly something to consider in the long term.

I think Yakumo was saying that when he was hunting down a machine that stores would recommend him which console to buy based upon compatibility of the machines.

From what I understand the DTL-H3010* are the most desirable for compatibility, H10000 for rarity I guess.

That is true. There's a list up on Sony Japan's site giving you a full compatability listing for all versions of the PS2.

I've got a print out somewhere that I made from the site. That has the URL on it. I tried to look for the page just now on Sony's site but that like so many Japanese homepages it's a pain in the arse to navigate so I'll try to find the list I printed out.

Earlier this week I ordered a blind box of 100 PS2 games which arrived this morning and as I expected over half is crap that I don't want. To be fair, there are some very nice games in the set I don't want such as quality RPGs or driving games but I have no interest in playing RPGs in Japanese these days unless it's a must have title and as for the likes of Gran Turismo, well..... Driving games are one of the game types that really does benefit from the leaps in modern technology so playing old ones like these isn't much fun. Old arcade style racing games on the other hand are still great fun because of their fantasy world styling.

Anyway, out of the 4500 yen box of 100 games I'll be keeping this lot. Oh, also 3 nice SFC games as a bonus !

And these are the ones going back on to Yahoo. I'll probably get about 3000 yen for this lot due to taking proper pictures and not just a blind auction like the box was when I bid on it.

That's quite an amazing lot, I must say. I've noticed you're on a PS2 binge, or did this lot just come up?
