I'm not really bothered about Nintendo but they aren't a big player now. Japan falling is an irk but that's because the west make mostly ****ty action games.

Killzone: Shadow Fall (2.27M)

Bestselling Microsoft-developed XB1 titles:

Halo: The Master Chief Collection (2.41M)
Forza 5 (2.00M)
Dead Rising 3 (1.38M)

Nintendo-developed Wii U titles that would be top on either of the lists above:

Mario Kart 8 (5.01M)
NSMBU (4.79M)
Nintendo Land (4.14M)
SSB for Wii U (3.49M)
SM3DW (3.43M)

Pokemon Omega Ruby/Pokemon Alpha Sapphire (8.5M) and SSB for 3DS (6.25M) are also Nintendo games released since PS4 launch that have outsold any PS4 game from ANY publisher.

Even as a snapshot Splatoon was the 3rd best-selling game globally last month, only beaten by Batman Arkham Knight and Fire Emblem Fates (Another Nintendo game).

You can make lists all you want . The real facts are Nintendo are having to bring out a new console early and 3rd parties are backing both MS and SONY more . There's simple reasons for that at the end of the day.

A large part of it, though, is because some third parties don't want to "compete" with Nintendo. They'd prefer to just release games on other platforms for that reason. It's like what happened with Ubi and Red Steel 2 last-gen.

3rd parties just like retail, back any system that makes them money and got people in good numbers buying their products/games. We can make all the lists you want, walk in to any gaming shop and see the One and PS4 getting the most backing and the prime shelf space , those are the real facts.

I also think there is a massive flaw in pulling out those sales figures. This exact same thing happened during the Cube era too when people would cite top ten GC games as being a great thing. Whereas in reality they were often an indicator of having precious little else to buy on that system so the big games would be adopted by a far greater percentage of console owners than on the MS and PS consoles. If you look across the entire number of games sold, I'm willing to bet those millions on the WiiU would look like a drop in the MS and PS ocean.

That's an interesting perspective. It reminds me of how Mario Kart 64 was in the N64's to 10 chart in the UK for most of the machine's life.

Yep. Now that shouldn't take away from the success of those individual games, many of which deserve their sales (especially when it comes to the big Nintendo games) but better choice means more scattered sales even if combined total sales are incredibly high. That doesn't get reflected in top tens.

There's a massive flaw in discounting Nintendo's games sales just because no-one else is releasing games on the hardware. If you add up all sales of all publishers' games across PS4, XB1 and Wii U then Nintendo are the third best-selling publisher this generation (marginally behind EA and Ubisoft) if you include 3DS and Vita games Nintendo are the single best-selling publisher in the business.


Edit: I think what we can agree on is that Nintendo aren't a big player on PS4 and that is the be all and end all of console gaming to some of us right now.

Nintendo them selfs are discounting the hardware and that says it all . They aren't bringing out the NX next year for the fun of it

So back on topic this is I'd say the worse Saturn & PS1 scrolling beat'em up, it also one of the worse Batman games:

I get the logic in the argument that the Wii U is a flop and that doesn't bode well for them going forward but then underlining that argument with the fact they're abandoning the platform to try gain more traction in the marketplace with a new console surely ignores the opportunity for growth that could be and betrays an attempt to create a narrative of Nintendo's impending doom. When actually that tired prediction has rarely turned out to be the case since people started it in the N64 days.

I think the greater issue is traditionalists/elitist are the most vocal, impassioned gamers and as a whole they don't enjoy motion controls, they don't enjoy tablet-like gamepads, they don't want amiibo and they find themselves no longer want Nintendo products and that's the end of Nintendo when actually Nintendo are in no more of a downturn than any other publisher, it's just magnified on Nintendo hardware because Wii was the home to the marginals/casuals and the Nintendo brand doesn't bring out the the combined legions of AV enthusiasts, GT/Forza fans, FIFA players, FPS fans, Anime darlings (not enough waifu) and Street Fighter pros to collectively drive the numbers on hardware. Regardless, I still fail to see how they're not "a big name" but I'm not going to argue with people who like to negate the only reliable and objective measure of how a publisher is doing compared to another, their games sales figures.


Edit: Back on topic, has Street Fighter: The Movie (the game) had a mention yet? Or Street Fighter 20XX or whatever that abomination was called.

OK, I'll offer one, though this may ruffle feathers - the Battle Arena Toshinden series.

I think they're all crap. The first one was novel at the time due to visuals (shaded and texture mapped before Tekken, and its 3D roll move) but overall I think they have nothing to offer the modern gamer. Pretty much everything good about it has found its way into far superior games.
