By far and away my favourite retro soundtrack is Streets of Rage 2 with this one being the best (although they're all pretty amazing). I don't remember anyone talking about the music in this game when it came out and I only really remember rating the boss fight music at the time but it all seems to get batter with age. Nothing else comes close.

I've always loved Mute City, it really draws me into the racing. It seems such a perfect fit for game; not so much the best music in the world but something about the greatest synergy between game and music.
After the manic, frantic Labyrinth Zone the pace of Star Light Zone is the perfect antidote. The music compliments it perfectly and is the post club chill soundtrack before the PlayStation made them cool.
I think the early King of Fighters soundtracks are so underrated; they barely seem to get a mention but I absolutely love them. They have me dancing at my cab (a bizarre sight indeed, try to imagine what you'd show an alien if he asked you to describe white people). Anyway, here's my two favourite tracks from the series
