    Critics Club V: Nintendo 64

As Sir Tom Jones once famously sang, "I just want your extra time and your-" dil-alil-alil -"Nintendo 64 variant"

Nintendo's 64 bit power lone warrior weighs in with a Nintendo fanboys candy coloured dream array of hardware variants.
But which was the best looking machine?

The iQue… because it has a normal pad.

J/k - that ice blue variant looks the don so going with that.

There’s not much variety other than colour so it’s more of a pick your favourite colour job here, amiright?

This thread reminds me of the 90s obsession with clear-plastic devices.

They're mostly hideous but I do like that orange and grey one. The Nintendo 64 Daiei Hawks Edition?

I love the colourful transparent models so much. Great colour choices, too. They look like sweets!

Googling it seems those particular variants came quite late, about 2000. That probably tracks about right for when I remember seeing them advertised in magazines.

With that timing in mind I wonder if the designers were influenced by the colourful iMacs of the time, which used similarly coloured orange and turquoise transparent casings. They released in '98.

Did want to pick up the white and red Japanese unit but left it too long and now they're a little more than I want to pay. I'm not a huge 64 fan but there is a handful of Pokémon games that I enjoy on the system which makes it a must own. Pretty much any of the transparent machines look cool too.

I would have liked one in the GBC Atomic Purple, but that seems to be the only colour they didn't do.

If was to have one it would be the Nintendo 64 Daiei Hawks Edition. I still kinda dig the original N64 design too to be honest.

I remember looking at Japanese launch day photos in NMS and seeing all the different controller colours stacked up and on display. When I finally got one I made it a priority to end up with all six colours ASAP. There were of course a load of JP only limited colours along the way which I couldn't keep up with, but I would have really liked a set of all the translucents that came out at the very end of the console's life.

They were the first company to do that, right? Different controller colour options?
