That bit was hillarious. And he thought he stood a better chance with his height adjustable steering wheel!

Does anyone really still watch Top Gear for the cars? Seriously? I see it more as a half scripted, half adlibbed sit com. Jeremy is the stubborn idiot Dad thats always right even when he's painly wrong. James is the long suffering Wife. The butt of a lot of jokes but deep down we know he's right. Richard is the mischeivous child. Always egging on Jeremy (Dad) and yet still loves his Mum (James)

As entertainment though it can't really be beat. Theres always a lot of laugh out loud moments. The chemistry is spot on. Right down to the re occuring character of (The Stig) a slightly deranged Uncle. Perfect Sunday night viewing in my opinion.

I couldn't care less about cars and I can't think of a more boring topic that isn't sports related, yet this is one of my favourite programs on tv. I guess I'm the kind of audience they're aiming for.

My wife feels exactly the same. I think she just likes the banter.

Don't get me wrong. I enjoy the car features aswell. They actually make it look intresting and exciting.

I love the repeated theme of gently crashing into each others old bangers when stopping in these challenges. Makes me laugh!!!

very good last night, i always enjoy when they do the UK based cheapie 3 way challenges.

i love the way they always smash into James May's car as well, so childish but always funny.

as usual ffwd thru the star in the car bit as can't stand that.

                  Fixed!

Really enjoyed last night. Hopefully they'll keep a good mix of cars and larks throughout the rest of the series, when they focus too heavily on one or the other I find the show tends to be dull.

I'm not too keen on the daft challenges like filling cars with water etc. But i did like the one from ages ago with a Toyota pick up that seemed to be indestructable. I think they even put it on top of a building and demolished it.

When i see that i start thinking silly thoughts like, "if i bought one of them, i could just not worry about servicing etc because it survived being blown up."

Anyone know how much they cost?

But, of course, when he remembers it's an Aston Martin, suddenly it's the best car ever and great value too..
Clarkson's opinions on cars (or anything at all) have never made any kind of sense. His newspaper review of the orginal McClaren F1 just slagged the car for its price and went on to list how many non car related things you could buy for the same money. Completely missing the point of course, plus the £800,000 Veyron he loves.

He hates all Porsche 911s and BMWs, and yet has frequently reviewed the cars on Top Gear and said that they have changed his mind....yet by the next episode he has completely forgotten that.

Which is why it's just as well that Top Gear is more of an entertainment show than a car show. If it were the former, it'd be rubbish.

TBH they could drop the reviews now. The best episodes are the ones with unscripted challenges and no reviews and no star in a reasonably priced car. The Winter Olympics one still stands as the best ever episode.

And how scripted was the beginning of the British Leyland challenge with the cars not starting? Is it me, or is it getting more and more obvious?

Absolutely - I have no interest in cars outside of mine not breaking down, but am constantly entertained by Top Gear; it even manages to transcend my complete loathing of Jeremy Clarkson.
