A review from the Guide to Doctor Who and its associated spin-offs, including Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures.
Buried in there is news that the BBC studio Bad Wolf Productions, that was set up for the new Torchwood series, has recieved $8m as part of Canada's new tax benefits scheme. Should viewing figures for Series 4 be even half decent it makes a 5th run very likely

What a breath of fresh air having a proper show back on TV. It was very much in the mould of the Children of Earth run and seems to have now completely removed the humour elements of the early series but none the less it's perfected the knack of finding an interesting subject matter and really going for it. Hopefully if this does well we'll get a run which is a little more overtly sci-fi one day as I miss those elements from it and having the characters talk about it but not experience it can be a little nostalgia inducing but overall it was a good scene setter and hopefully episode 2 will start the revelations coming. The only dodgy bit I noticed was when Rex escaped hospital, commandeered a car, flew to Heathrow and drove to a secluded welsh bay all in a phone call.

I thought it was abysmal.
The American network input has turned it into a generic Sci-Fi drama serial like Flashforward or The Event, but probably not as good. It's lost all its character.
The soundtrack was crap, the action sequences cliche and the black guy has a horrible case of overacting. Worst of all, Captain Jack's charisma is buried amongst a heap of other egotistical yanks. It's also pretty clear they're going to gloss over everything that's happened previously judging by the FBI peoples reaction to the mention of alien technology.
Such a shame considering how good Children of Earth was.

I watched the first episode the other night and I think it is a real mixed bag. The CIA chap is hammy, the helicopter sequence was laugh out loud cheesy and what is the motion blur all about? The music is also super generic I miss the old Torchwood style and sound fx.
Still the premise is interesting and at least the higher profile American cast members look pretty serious. I'll keep watching to see where it goes I think.
Even though that motion blur is awful.

The second episode was much better I thought. The action sequences are really badly done though, hopefully there won't be many more of them!
This has to be the worst sequence of all
:lol
Interesting idea for a story though, hopefully with a few more episodes it'll develop nicely but I can't help but feel that the excellent last series was something of a fluke.
