The Zat gun from Stargate SG-1... For two simple reasons...

The logical reason because it's a fully loaded, easily concealed, rapid firing, multi-purpose powerhouse of death... (1 shot to knock unconcious, 2 to kill, 3 to disintegrate... perfect for those 'difficult' situations)...

And the fun reason, because it makes the most awesome sound when fired, better than any other handheld weapon in Sci-Fi I can think of!

The puke sticks from Minority Report deserve a mention as a realistic advanced weapon.

Zat gun has always been a bit cheap for me, way to convinient for plot purposes (way of disabling machines, getting rid of bodies, letting main characters get shot with no lasting effects etc.)

Anyone seen Dark Angel / I come in peace? Old Dolph Lundrum film.

There's a cool gun in that.

"OK. That's it. I'm turning this baby to level three."

Obliterates whole carparks with one tiny handgun.

And then there's the heatseaking frisby (CD) blade. All very cool.

"...and you'll go in pieces!" Boom boom!

Ha ha, yeah, I remember that film and the ace CD gun.

Weren't there some ace futuristic machine guns in Van Damme's Timecop at the start?

Ooh ooh! How ace was Snake Plisken's Mac-10 in Escape from New York?!

The Joker's electric handshake in Batman.

That Tony Jaa flick where he straps elephant bones to his arms to hit people with.

The german's knife in Saving Private Ryan.

not really the last one, that would be sick

Someone mentioned Robocop's gun, as a kid I always wanted that. Even saw a BB version on sale years ago but it was kind of cheap so I didn't trust the quality.

Liked the alien laser guns in V.

Oh yeah the head remover from the Flying Guillotine flicks.
