I got the US Planet Earth blu-ray as its region free and easy to get hold of on amazon or ebay (the uk sites)

Had it recorded on my Sky+ box from bbc hd but these discs, wow, the pictures are just amazingly good (played from my ps3 thru HDMI at 1080i)

its just a straight run of all the episodes, for some reason they've trimmed the extra's.

if you want to convince anybody of the quality increase though these are a good starter

Ezee, since I know you have a HD-DVD player (seen you watching stuff on LIVE) how would you say this BD compares to something like King Kong on HD-DVD...I always consider that the HD-DVD benchmark, how do you feel about this BD?
In my opinion, Pirates (Blu-Ray) and Matrix (HD-DVD) are now the benchmarks on either format for high definition video quality.....in terms of video quality especially Pirates.

I watched Training day last week on Blu Ray, with this and Casino Royale it's been enough to convince me that Blu Ray is well worth the extra lay out financially.

Got Black Hawk Down the other day and i'm looking forward to that as pepole have commented how good it looks!

Haven't seen Pirates, but personally I'd give the benchmark to something like Casino Royale (BD). The Matrix is a little too soft and has some halo artefacts (look in the scenes where they're against white backgrounds) for me to really get excited about it.

Is Casino Royale really the best BR has to offer? I was pretty disappointed with it when compared to Kong. Saying that everyone else rates Serenity highly and I was disappointed with that too.

It's the best on BD that I've seen, personally. There's nothing technically wrong with it from what I can see and there's not really a shortage of detail, so I can't fault the transfer from a technical standpoint.

Buggery **** Nuts, I watched the Descent last night and compared to the DVD release it's like watching a completely different film!!!

Initially it's really disappointing, as there's a lot of grain in the outside scenes, but once you get down in those caves...

I'm pretty sure the sequences were all shot in hi-def and the end result is absolutely stunning.

The whole film is shot in high-def: 35mm film (hence the nice detail and also the grain).

                    Thanks for that Lyris

It's amazing how many of my DVDs are now looking shoddy since I picked up stuff like Pirates, The Frightners, The Descent and The Departed.

I agree with you about the Matrix though. I was eagerly awaiting the scene when he's in the white room with Morpeous as I was expecting it to be razor sharp. What a pity it wasn't

Yeah, it's by no means bad but it's not really the "Wow" I was expecting. I guess since it's one of their big guns I was setting myself up for disappointment if it was anything less than perfect, though.

I loved how The Descent looked as well. Bar one tiny bit of visible compression I couldn't fault it. As for the grain, better to see that than to have them suck all the detail out by trying to hide it. Warts and all and all that

It's released by Universal so it's HD DVD only at the moment.

Is the UK version of Casino Royale region locked?

No it's region free as with most if not all Sony published Blu Ray stuff.
