I enjoy most of his stuff but Europa is a favourite of mine. The first time I watched it was on some late night film series and I knew absolutely nothing about it and I sat through most of with my mouth open and being complete thrown by what I was watching.
I know it borrows a lot from German expressionist films but as is pretty normal for him he seemed to tear up every rule as he worked through it. Right from the hypnotic first scene to the very last one I was in complete awe of what I was seeing.
I'm hoping that it's going to be Criterion's upcoming blu-ray releases as I've got rid of my DVD now.
Have you watched The Tin Drum? A very different film in some ways but watching one always makes me want to watch the other.
