It genuinely pains me that this theme won't be in the new film. It's one of the best themes I think there is for encapsulating a character and put to imagery can still give goosebumps despite being near 35 yr old

Yeah, but he's SUPER man. He has to look like a world class (non steroid-ed) bodybuilder otherwise he ends up looking like a fricking Twilight pin up or bloody CK model. Fed up with these hollywood pretty boys messing up the look, the pic posted looks like its been touched up massively too. At least Reeves was around when Supes wasnt too bulked up in the comics or when actors were not really bulking up massively for their roles like Snipes, Reynolds and Jackman. It made it more believable in the late 70's early 80s. These days we expect more I guess . . . .
*EDIT*
eastyy, completely agree. No one has done a Kent yet who can touch Reeves portrayal. Not Welling, not Caine and definetly not that 2d wooden dummy, Routh.

As far as his strength goes Supermans powers, are, well, superhuman. Technicaly he shouldn't need massive muscles to have superhuman strength, hes an alien, its natural to assume that Kryptonians muscles are simpley a heck of alot stronger than ours, so he doesnt need big ones.
Plus Superman would still have to go to the gym every day to get a body like that, and I've never seen him go to the gym in any comic tv show or film. Plus its also natural to assume that the stuff in a human gym wouldnt do much for his muscle mass anyway.Last edited by rmoxon; 09-05-2011, 11:56.

That makes zero sense, he's super strong because of the yellow sun. Kryptonians had normal strength on their planet. Anyway, whilst I dont draw the comics, you dont see Superman fans ever complaining he's got an over the top physique. Plus Bruce Wayne is at peak fitness with similar looking build, would you expect a normal sized Superman cast opposite a tonks batman? Didnt think so.

My point was that Kryptonians dont have normal strength on our planet, and its nothing to do with the size of their muscles.
Why not cast a smaller Superman than Batman? it would make sense. Batman has to compensate for actualy being a normal human being, Superman doesnt.
Then again these are comic book movies and are probabaly more about image than they are about making sense, so probably not actualy..

I have heard the explanation that his muscles grow with age, as his powers developed. But frankly, I just don't see the point. His powers are supernatural, the muscles are neither here nor there.
I've toyed with the idea of writing a script for a film in which the superhero is obese and feeble. If he can defy gravity, then presumably he doesn't need any help lifting another being off the ground. I just imagine him getting really puffed out after a while.
