Im pretty sure The reality of naval life is a lot differnt to the one shown in top gun.

This argument has proven my initial point really. I was speaking personally and stated that I don't really get influenced by movies because they are fantasy and I know they don't represent real life.

The only film that could ever inspire me would be a documentary I suppose, but even then what I was watching wouldn't always be 100 percent accurate. I don't trust the information I'm given enough to be inspired most of the time, even by real events.
I think you have proven the point to yourself. For someone who thinks films have no bearing in peoples lives you sure do spend a lot of your time disagreeing with people about them.

Of course your right though, the real world didn't inspire people to write about books to inspire people to write plays to inspire people to create films to inspire people who live in the real world.

If film makers are influenced by the world and people in it to create films then the opposite must ring true. Basic cause and effect.

Well yeah. I was only ever talking about my own opinion.

Its other people who jumped down my throat and acted like I was saying they could never be inspired by anything.

I had always stated it was just a personal thing with me. Not even sure why I should have to defend that, but I did anyway.

I keep badgering you because I read a lot of your posts in the movie thread and although don't agree with some I see how passionate you are about film. I am just surprised by your first post, not so much the life changing movies part but the fantasy, no bearing in the real world part.

I love films and am passionate about the art form but it is highly unlikely any will ever change my life.

My life is my own...I believe that people can do whatever they put there mind too to a certain extent, but whatever I choose to do in my life is somthing for me to decide. I've seen films that have moved me, and I've seen films I have related too, both in good ways and bad, but none of them have inspired me to do anything different with my life (at least not consciously, and I presume concious thought is what this discussion is based around).

Im actually impressed if someone can honestly say they watched a film and it made them change their life in some way, becuase to connect that deeply to somthing that technically isn't about you not only shows immense empathy, but also amazing willpower.

It'd be a fair few number who joined the Navy etc after Top Gun. Hell, even my Uncle went through the process along with almost every single one of his mates purely because of the film. Some of them even got in with one or two still there to this day. My Uncle didn't though, and he still finds that he attempted it hilarious.

His reasoning for doing it? Top Gun made it look like they'd pull loads of girls

Oh no, don't try to spin this on me. You tried to downplay my comment about Top Gun serving as a navy recruitment ad, by saying it was an insignifigant number of people who joined after seeing the film, where as in real life it was infact a huge boost. That means you were wrong, both in the number of people who applied to navy and the fact that you said, and I quote you:

That hard to admit you were wrong anonymously on the internet?

If the world would in some way be different if a film hadn't existed, then that film changed the world. Many films change the world. Even Battlefield Earth (made us look at Travolta in a whole different light). Of course Top Gun changed the world if it led to increased recruitment in the navy. Our society is massively influenced by the media, including film.
