I've read a lot of interviews, including one with Ron Moore by Harlan Ellison, where the original series gets bashed an awful lot (Mr. Ellison stating in no uncertain terms that it's one of the worst TV programmes of all time) but I've always thought it was pretty good myself - the theme music and opening titles always get me going *grooowwlll*, the FX are great (although recycled to hell), the premise is interesting (and in no way rips off Star Wars, Lucas you litigious bastid) and it's got Dirk Benedict in it. DIRK BENEDICT.

I like Living Legend best - Lloyd Bridges was superb as Commander Cain.

Overall I much prefer the first half, when they are battling the Cylons rather than dealing with the war on Terra (bet they never knew that would be a stock phrase of the 21st century). However, there are a couple of diabolical episodes, like Young Lords.

Dirk Benedict is indeed fantastic in it, with some one-liners as good as any of Bond's. "I like the way you haven't gone overboard on funiture". Classic

Of course, Galactica 1980 is beyond the pale, even if it does feature flying invisible motorbikes (even Megaforce's weren't invisible!) and Barry Van Dyke, my second favourite daytime telly thespian.

Saying that, they anticipated the "human" cylons in that by some measure, even if they are cack. However, I need only hear the insipid, monotone, er, tones of Dr. Zee and I feel the irresistable urge to poo and throw it at the screen. Nay, cup 'n' liquefy it in my hands and rub it on with great alacrity.

Yeah 1980 was cack. So ridiculously cack. But the original show is great and the new show owes such a huge amount to it. It had some hot chicks too. And a robot dog. That show had everything.

It was so strange - you could absolutely rip it apart but it was excellent FUN to watch.

Oooh, I hadn't heard of that Caprica series that is mentioned in one of the links above. Could be very good if it's around the time of the Cylon wars. Plus it would extend the BSG loveliness after the fourth series ends.

There's an 8 minute recap of the first 3 seasons out. It's blocked on the official site unless you are in the US. Booooo. It looks like it's been released officially on vuze though. Worth a watch.
