I know they're going for something big and it very likely will be a voice only or multiversal thing but him returning in this way feels like possibly the least impressive return for either him or the character.

The multiverse angle is obvious, but you have no way of knowing for sure - none of us do - if he is/isn't physically coming back to act the part.

He has refused to rule out returning to the MCU many times in many interviews (read: pay me a sh1t-ton of cash, Kevin Feige!) so there's every chance he could be coming back in person to play Dr. Doom.

All that said, I do agree with you about it being underwhelming in the grand scheme of things.

That's probably all there is to it. I feel like Marvel know things are stacked against them right now, regardless of how huge Deadpool will likely be, and Fantastic Four I think was always a tough sell so having a stunt like this could be just what they need to get people talking about a real next phase for Marvel.

That said, I have to say I still find it hard to care. Downey Jr is great though and I'm sure he'll bring a lot to the role.
