Deadline is currently working through the box office films of 2018 looking at their grosses, production costs, p&a, talent participations and revenues earnt from Video on Demand services, DVD etc. The result is a daily instalment establishing which 10 films were truly the biggest success stories of last year once all the dust has settled and the math completed.
They've halfway in and so far the results are:
The 10th Most Successful Film of 2018 - A Star is Born
Warner Bros' A Star Is Born was the 10th most profitable movie of 2018, thanks to Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga.
Low overheads made this one a winner
The 9th Most Successful Film of 2018 - The Grinch
https://deadline.com/2019/03/the-gri...18-1202582389/
Though less profitable that some of Illuminations other films the film was a strong performer
The 8th Most Successful Film of 2018 - Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
The sequel to Jurassic World grossed $148 million in the U.S. and Canada and $891.7M internationally.
It made half the profit of the previous film but promotional partnerships boosted this right back up
The 7th Most Successful Film of 2018 - Deadpool 2
Deadpool 2 raked in $235.4 million in profit for 20th Century Fox, less than the original's $322.2M but still a big hit.
Profits were a little down on the original but this was due to higher marketing and production costs.
The 6th Most Successful Film of 2018 - Venom
When it comes to evaluating the financial performance of top movies, it isn’t about what a film grosses at the box office. The true tale is told when production budgets, P&A, talent participations and other costs collide with box office grosses and ancillary revenues from VOD to DVD and TV. To get close to that […]
The film made 23% more profit for Sony than Spider-Man: Homecoming accomplished.

Avengers: Endgame is on course for an opening global total of an staggering $800m+
Dumbo began its rollout and took top spot but suffered due to weak reviews, it earned $116m worldwide which was below projections and sits in between the earnings of the moderate hits the live action remakes have made and the failures.
Us held well and reached $171m worldwide
Captain Marvel did well also but backed off enough to miss the $1bn target. Now sitting on $990m in its third week the film will definitely break the marker this week though it now seems likely Shazam will halt the film from getting to Panthers level of success.
This weekend Pet Sematary lives again at the cinema whilst the DCU hopes for a second big hitter with Shazam

Continuing Deadlines tracking of the ten most profitable films of 2018:
The 5th Most Successful Film of 2018 - Aquaman
Without a Star Wars film in the Christmas corridor, Aquaman took full advantage in 2018 and became the movie of the moment.
Yes - DCU finally cracked the success nut on a Marvel scale with this 6th entry into the universe. Strong appeal to female audiences helped the film and the film may have released in a busy period but it was aided by the lack of massive tentpole rivals such as Star Wars etc.
The 4th Most Successful Film of 2018 - Bohemian Rhapsody
Bohemian Rhapsody way overachieved, grossing close to $900 million at the global box office and winning the most Oscars this year.
Success at the awards season allowed this to enjoy a long run for its genre but international takings were insanely high

The 2nd Most Successful Film of 2018 - Black Panther
https://deadline.com/2019/04/black-p...nt-1202587563/
Massive success even in the home that outstripped expectations thanks to much higher than normal earnings in the US sees the film take the penultimate spot
Captain Marvel has cracked the $1bn nut just before the field of competition hots up. It's now the 7th highest grossing MCU movie of all time and only the second origin film to reach the target. Civil War is the next target.
FRIDAY MIDDAY: New Line/DC’s Shazam! is currently at this point in time looking at a $18.9M Friday, a 3-day of $49M and including previews a running total of $52.3M. Note late night business yesterday pushed its Thursday higher, so we might see the same again tonight, plus Saturday matinees, natch. Paramount’s Pet Sematary is drawing in $9.5M today […]
Shazam's previews earned more than those for last years Aquaman and the film is on course for a solid opening amidst strong reviews. The film is expected not to reach Aquaman levels due to the tone of the film and the characters lower awareness to the public but it looks to be the second success story in a row for DC and should perform well until Endgame arrives at the end of the month.

Shazam! opened strong to the tune of $158m. The films performance stacked close to Marvel's Ant Man and it's received positive feedback meaning it should be able to make the most of the few weeks it has until Endgame hits. Ant Man went on to make a total of $519m, a total that would see Shazam! become the lowest grossing DCU movie however all other DCU movies cost $150-$250m to make whereas Shazam! cost $100m so proportionately it would be a clear hit for Warners.
Pet Semetary opened to $42m against a $21m budget. An It style earner was always off the cards and by comparison to other big horror hits this holds up well.
Dumbo's ears have stopped working meanwhile and second week earnings on the remake fell hard, the film now on $213m worldwide.
Captain Marvel settled the week on $1.037bn, it broke through the barrier but weekend earnings globally showed public attention has moved swiftly on now to other releases and the film won't have the momentum to take down any more goals.
This coming weekend will be largely down to how Shazam! and Pet Sematary hold up against Hellboy

Shazam held on to the top spot in its second week rising to a global total of $258m.
The rebooted Hellboy opened to $12m which was below expectations and came off the back of bad reviews and a poor audience response also meaning we're looking at a box office failure scenario.
Pet Sematary held okay and is now up to $76.8m on the back of its $21m budget
Meanwhile Dumbo attempted to halt its descent and is now at $266m but with one week to go and a huge $170m budget this seems to be cemented as a failure for the mouse house.
This Friday see's the release of The Curse of La Llorona which is connected to the successful Conjuring Cinematic Universe however as the film isn't being marketed as such it's likely to be a low baller giving Shazam one more open week to cash grab before Endgame

It was a very weak Easter weekend at the box office this week:
The top earning film was new opener The Curse of La Llorona at $55m internationally. The film is only loosely connected to the Conjuring universe and hasn't emphasised that link as such, it's also received reviews at the lower end of the universes scale and so likely won't trouble it's siblings earnings but that $55m opening still shows the strength of the connective tissue as the film is budgeted at a mere $9m making it another instant win for Warners.
Warners also took the number 2 spot with Shazam! in its third week. The film suffered due to the slow turnout and will be hit by this weeks big release but it now rests of $321m worldwide.
Notably, Endgame boosted Captain Marvel as it faces closing on screens, the film is now resting on $1.09bn worldwide
This week it's all about the record breaking attempt Avengers: Endgame will be making

Avengers: Endgame is opening to a four day bow, as of early this morning it was 50% of the way through earning its opening haul. At the halfway mark how is the film doing?
$643m worldwide
Remember, that's half way. Half. Way. With all of Saturday and Sundays earnings still to be accounted for Endgame is, within 48 hours:
-Higher earning that Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Captain America, Thor, Incredible Hulk, Ant Man and Ant Man and the Wasp in their lifetimes
-Less than one million away from overtaking Thor: The Dark World
-Selling tickets at a pace that by the time Saturday alone is done could see it overtake the lifetime earnings of Doctor Strange, Captain America Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor Ragnarok, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 and Spider Man Homecoming
-By the end of the weekend it's on course to be the first film ever to earn more than $1bn in its opening weekend, a feat that would likely also see it out-earn the entire running success of Captain Marvel
-Should Endgame succeed at that target, in its opening weekend it would enter the list of the top 25 earning films of all time
-The film has already broken the record for the highest earning international opening of all time

It's insane that Avatar got that much. When you think how popular Endgame is and the fact that people want to see it because it's a conclusion to the story. Avatar was a simple one off 3D film. Endgame is showing every 15/30 minutes in some cinemas to cater for demand. Avatar must have been running back to back!
