Yeah, Evil Dead II in many ways feels like the film Raimi wanted to make first time around, it follows such a similar path. It's such a fun movie. The only thing that comes close is ep1 of Ash vs Evil Dead. But II is the king. I think James Cameron put it best when telling Bill Paxton he had to come see it because "It's not every day that you see a movie that starts a new genre: the horror cartoon".

Movie 28 - Army of Darkness
The third film picked up from the ending of the second with Ash being pulled into the Middle Ages and fighting off the unleashed undead as he attempts to make it back to present day. Moving much more heavily away from the horror of the prior two films and more deeply into the humour and action arena, the film would act as the closing entry of the franchise for many years to come...

Weak link or time to Hail to the King, Baby?

I enjoyed Army of Darkness at the flicks but watching it again a few years back I didn't feel it had aged well. Fair play for taking the series somewhere new but the horror was watered down to such a degree it feels more like a Harry Hausen afternoon matinee. Not that there's anything wrong with that. It's just not The Evil Dead.

I can understand the desire to do something different and there's a lot of fun to be taken from AoD but yeah, it's the weakest of the three for it

Darkness falls across the land, the midnight hour is close at hand...
Creatures crawl in search of blood, to terrorize yawls neighbourhood...
And whoever shall be found, without the soul for getting down...
Must stand and face the hounds of hell, and rot inside a corpses shell

It's Halloween 2022 and the last entry for this years month of Canon-Strike: Never Ending Horror!

            Movie 29 - Evil Dead
The 2013 entry that presents itself as a reboot but is supposed to be loosely connected to the prior entries in a plan that would have seen multiple sequels eventually merge it with the Ash led films. That never came to pass though with the slightest of post-credits sequences being the only direct reference to Ash. The film follows another group of teens in the cabin, facing the demon forces in a blood bath with planned further films being replaced with the series Ash vs the Evil Dead until next year when the fifth entry will finally release focusing on another new cast.

Did this last entry live up to the prior ones?

Yep, and the added room that appears later in the film largely reveals she could get out easily too

Army of Darkness is one of my fave films.
Love how it plays to the action and comedy over the horror.

Sam Raimi bringing his director A-game in some of those shots.

On Sunday the month of October will arise once more causing the clawing, decaying fingers of Canon-Strike XI to pierce the viel between the world of the dead and the realm of the living...

Darkness falls across the land, a month of horror is close at hand
Movies play in search of blood, to terrorize our forumhood
And whoever shall be found, without involvement shall be frowned
And stand to face the hounds of hell, to Canon-Strike your soul you'll sell...

WILL YOU DARE PRY THE CREAKING COFFIN LID ON A MONTH OF HORROR THIS HALLOWS EVE?

As opposed to past years, myself and the missus are going for the 31 Horrors in 31 Nights approach. We have around 28 of the 31 nights sorted, aiming primarily for things we haven't watched before and avoiding franchises so I think there's only one sequel on the list.

                        Movie 31 - The Omen
A child used to replace one that died shortly after birth later emerges to be the son of the antichrist and as his age grows, so does the evil influence he has over the lives of those around him. Critics were mixed on the film though audiences lapped up the demonic actions of Damien and the lives that came to an end over the course of the films plot.

Where the critics or audiences correct?

Movie 32 - Damien: The Omen II
Releasing two years later, the sequel jumps 7 years on in Damiens life with him being raised by his Uncle, Aunt and Cousin. Reaching an age where he begins to realise who he is and what he is capable of, Damien begins to pick off those around him. The sequel recieved mixed results but was broadly considered a solid sequel for those who enjoyed the original.

For me, I think Omen kind of wasted the concept of Damien. It feels liek a very obvious focus for a horror film to use, very easy to explain and get the audience on board for but both films felt like they expect the audience to find the idea of Damien frightening and to do the work as the films themselves carry pretty much zero suspense to them

Movie 33 - Omen III: The Final Conflict
Sam Neill takes over the role of Damien who is now grown up and set on preventing the second coming of Christ. The film following Damiens plot to prevent this by having all children born on the date of Christs resurrection killed, a plan that see's him face off against those around him and his own demise. The reviews were weaker for this entry with most citing how low scale the conflict actually is considering the nature of the battle the trilogy had been building toward.

Should this have remained the Final Conflict?

Not uncommon for a horror franchise but the third entry here really was a dud. Just really clunky and Neill isn't suited to the role
